i remember when i first joined i was asking about using cut up tampons in the substrate to hold water. i took alot of heat for that one, and to this day i still maintain it can be done

Wouldn't that be a breeding ground for bacteria? It would be too hard for the myc to colonize and, being cotton, would be perfect for microbial growth, including competing molds.

if they can colonize wood they can colonize cotton. the perfect thing for microbial growth is too much moisture but you can control how much it gets, and the cotton will actually help by obsorbing any excess moisture which would help prevent that kind of growth

Just because cotton comes from plants, doesn't mean it offers the same nutritional value as wood.
I'm not saying you're wrong about it being possible, but equating the two just because they're "plants" is wrong.

i didn't equate it just because they are plants, i equated it in how hard it is to break each of them down. oysters break down all kinds of shit, that is much tougher and with less nutrition.
also just because it colinizes doesn't mean it has to break it down anyway, it could mearly colinize it for the moisture benifits and nothing else
