Hello,
I have a couple acres of oak trees. We were looking at clearing the lot or at least thinning it out to put in some fruit trees and landscaping eventually. Since Im not in a hurry the thought occurred to me that I might be able to inoculate some of the oak trees I was going to be bringing down anyways with chicken of the woods thus killing the trees naturally plus harvest some food for a few years first. Then after finally bringing them down they would already be fruiting so maybe could continue to grow as logs? Anyone ever done anything like this? Would the natural fungicides prevent this from even working? There are also some standing dead timber on the lot (pretty sure oak) would I potentially get better results trying it on this? Could something like shiitake work on the dead standing timber? Do you think Id have better success on a living tree by putting clusters of plugs vs the checker pattern usually used on logs?
Yes I know I could cut down the trees and stack etc.. but I'd rather not create piles of wood to keep the snake population down and also I thought if I could grow the mushrooms vertically might help with deer eating them if some are high enough.
I appreciate out of the box thinking and consideration on this.

I have done this with oyster. I would assume it would work with chicken and shiitake. But oyster has a rep for being more aggressive. I plug the trees every foot or so as far as I can reach. I also force spawn into cracks and broken branches.

For trees with thicker bark (1/2") do you drill deep enough so the plug is fully in wood or just embed it so it's in the wood/bark for the depth of the plug? I suppose I could drill between bark plates for my plug holes too...
Did the trees die very quickly with the oysters or is it like a.. well maybe in 8 years or so kind of thing?
I really appreciate your feedback.

A healthy tree can fight things off. I only plug trees that are already getting their asses kicked by something else. I don't like killing 50 year old+ oak trees. They tend to die a few years after that. The nice thing is that the stump will be gone in a year or two after the tree completely dies. Trees usually live for many years with mushrooms growing out of them. If you want the tree to live, then plug one side only. Shady side. Maybe only a quarter of the circle. I like plugging down low near the roots also. Try different things.
