Is this corking or something to worry about?

Picked this up on the cheap. Considering the state of some of his other cacti, i thought I'd ask about this flaking skin at the base. Normally I'd put this down to ageing corking, but some of his other plants were clearly infested with scale and god knows what. I used a toothbrush to remove a few white dots here and there that could've been the beginnings of scale, but he's pretty clean now.
Anyways, here he is.

So is this mites or something to worry about? You can see the flaking skin.

Regular corking to me. If it doesent' feel soft, i'd say it's nothing to worry about.

looks ok..sometimes when a dry cutting or rooted plant is kept too damp, the skin will begin to flake, and the under layer can rot. Just watch it carefully, but you should be fine.

Good to know, thanks. I've had him sitting like this for a couple of days, without a pot, attempting to dry the root ball a bit so I can tease it open and loosen up the mass up without damaging it to much. It was seriously pot bound and seemingly won't dry up because it's been raining the last few days with high humidity.
If there's any easy way to dry him out quicker so I can repot him, I'd love to know.

Go ahead and work your fingers gently into the rootball. You will break some, but once you get them loose, the extra soil falls away. Then the roots can dry and heal for a week or two before replanting. I always try to give at least ten days.
