Who plays guitar here??
    #22158776 - 08/28/15 10:56 PM (8 years, 5 months ago)

Are you self taught? Can you actually play the guitar or have just learned a few songs?

I am trying to teach myself, but im having a little trouble with some of the basic chords. Are lessons really worth the money? I want to really learn how to play...not just learn a few songs and say look at me i can play the guitar  lol

Any tips on self teaching? I already play drums. Ive always had a natural rhythem when it comes to music, so i am good on that aspect. I can play about any song on drums after practicing it a few times, but guitar is proving to be more difficult for me.

Dont stress urself over it, patience is virtue, or whatever the fuck they say. Yea just learn to enjoy playing, if u don't feel like playing, don't. It's really that simple. I'm not gonna lie to u and tell u you'll learn this shit over night, although nothing is impossible.. but I mean time isn't really important, just do U.

Almond Flour plays the guitar. You should ask him to play for you.

I'm self taught, here is one of my songs.  Skip to 2.50 for the solo if you want.

Yeah ive been learning random chords and bits and pieces of songs, but id rather be able to know the guitar by heart. Rather than just be able to play a few select songs.

Its cool and all when you can play a song, but it bugs me sometime when ppl act like they know the guitar when in fact they just memorized a few songs. You know what i mean?

Im just starting out by learning most commonly used chords and how to read guitar tabs.

Ill keep working on it.

Memorize a scale throughout the entire fret-board, and improvise on it all the time. After a while, playing on that scale will be second-nature. That's what I do.

Ahh okay thanks for the advice! I also have some fucked up fingers that kind of get in the way :mad2:

Do you play right or lefty? I am right handed but almost considered buying a left handed guitar because of fingers i meantioned.

I am right-handed and play righty

Lots of famous guitarists have fucked up fingers but manage playing in the position relevant to their dominant hand

But do whatever feels best for you

I play. I took lessons on and off. Taught myself some things too. I'd recommend taking lessons starting out. It will familiarize you with the basics.

That's definitely the right link.

Start by learning songs you already know and like.  Get guitar pro and download tabs for it.  ultimateguitar.com

Learn your scales and repeat them over and over, walking up and down them. Learn your basic chords and practice jumping from one chord to the next on your in between beats. repeat repeat repeat. this will build muscle memory as to where your chords are and where your scales are. This will then allow you to learn songs quickly because your fingers probably already know the mechanics of the song just not the composition. It also allows you to just jam with people playing random stuff.

You can do lessons but to be honest go buy one of those big wall posters with all your chords on it and another one with the pentatonic and blues scales on it. sit in front of those and stare at them as much as you can while trying to avoid looking at your neck as much as you can. In a year of doing this at least 3-4 days a week you will probably be further along than lessons will bring you.

If you learn to play guitar in a boring and generic way, you'll end out up a boring and generic guitarist.

I'm self taught. I'd recommend spending a lot of time learning songs by ear, you'll be better able to see how your favorite musicians created a song, and have a better understanding of how chords and melodies fit together based on that. It's really important to improvise and write your own stuff as well. I'd definitely say try to practice mostly on acoustic guitar or without plugging your electric in. It's easy to get caught up in the effects an electric guitar has to offer without actually learning to play the instrument, if that makes any sense.

:whathesaid:

Practice is definitely most important as is messing around and experimenting to find what suites and feels best to you.

I like to practice by playing along to songs I love, it is a good way to experiment and some music can really make you work to fit stuff into it.

Which makes it good practice, of course as Grenwolf said practicing acoustic is important too. I love effects but I try to play acoustic a fair amount for balance.

That being said you can use effects for A LOT of cool stuff. They are not necessary at all but can really diversify your sound. I didn't bother getting any tell I had been playing on and off for a few years though and really got into it. Then I bought myself a nicer guitar and amp and started collecting effects. Musical equipment is a solid investment if you are smart and careful, though it is expensive.

As for lessons, in my case I took them right as I started. It really turned me off from guitar becouse it wasn't "fun" at all and I was young and wanted to have fun and mess around, not more school like learning. Now however, years later I kind of wish I took more lessons or was taking some now becouse I would really benefit from it. I prefer improvisational stuff from the heart personally but learning as much as you can about music helps.

I'm self taught the old school way

I made noise to all my favourite records my dad gave me until the sound started to match the records and actually sound good

Eventually I moved onto guitar tablature and learned all the tasty riffs and licks I fancied at the time

From year 2 on I've been writing and recording my own songs.

I'm not very good for a guy who has been playing 13 years, but I have a lot of passion and creativity.  A lot of emotion in my playing.  I make music many people tell me trances them out.  I go into a meditative state almost when I play.  My guitar is my greatest therapy

I don't do bands or anything like that.  Rarely play in front of other people

Like I say, not the greatest player and I play for me.  And I know almost zero theory :/

But I do share recordings online to quite a few people

My advice...at the beginning, learn all the stuff you love.  You have to start somewhere and what better way than learning your most favourite guitar riffs.  Don't go for full songs just yet.  Just your most favourite riffs.  Mesmerize them.  Learn many.  Have a catalogue of all these little riff samples stored in your head.  In time, they become your greatest warm up   Just keep persisting.  It never felt like a chore to me.  I was so passionate about it

Eventually, start watching some guitar videos on theory.  I never did this and sometimes wish I did.  Learn your basic chords and scales

By the end of year one, you will transition into your own riff and song writing quite naturally.  The world is your oyster from this point

Above all....practice, practice, practice!

Good luck and enjoy!

The path I laid out has nothing to do with boring or generic it has to do with creating a pathway of learning that will prove to be challenging and ongoing. If its boring then thats up to the person behind the guitar to challenge themselves. All I suggest is a path that will in a year or twos time will allow you to easily play along with almost anything on the radio with or without tabs you will have the knowledge for the hobby to feel satisfying.

Shrooms & a looping effect or echo with no decay and a wah pedal will blow your mind.
