Just finished the 45 minute bath, and I have a fair amount of burst grain. Should I just toss them and do a 30 minute soak on the next batch?

eatyualive said: Where is the gap? I have a gap in mine. But I flip the tub upside down so the lid acts as the floor of my sab. It also allows more work space as this tub is wider at the top than bottom. I think the gap is ok. I have open arm holes in mine. If the gap is on top. Flip your sab.
I put a plexi window in the bottom of the tub, and used silicone to seal it. I wanted to be able to see agar isolations better by having a clear view instead of translucent, so the gap is at the top of the box, over my work area. I put strong shipping tape around the full window on top and bottom, so I think it's all good now.

Man, the burst grains will be ok if you sterilize the crap out of them. Mushroom myclium enjoys the extra starch generated by burst grains also. To avoid the noid (burst grains) with whole oats, I would strongly suggest going with 20-25 minute hard boil instead of 45 minutes. 45 minutes is too long.

Thanks, Ham. I didn't boil them for 45, but poured them into boiling water and removed from heat and covered them. There may be 1% burst. Next time I will do the 25 minute roiling boil. Just trying to get this down and find what will work consistently for me.

The 45 is not a hard boil. You bring the water to a rolling boil. Remove from heat, then pour the grain in. Its a boiled water bath like foomans wbs tek. I only boil for 25 like you do ham.

Hey Eat, I spread a handful of diatomacious earth over the top layer of my bag a few days ago and rolled it back up. I don't see anything moving around in there anymore I did use a few jars worth of bug infested oats for my last round. They worked out just fine. In hindsight I don't know why I assumed they were lost Yeah, the wife and I were discussing the eggs being laid in the grain well before it was bagged however I didn't know the part about the "allowed bug parts" lol. I'll be looking that up for sure

ive never tried it twice. id have to see how the grain looks in the morning to be honest.
you may be able to give it a 10 minute boiled water soak. then pc it. but that is me guessing as ive never tried this. and i would have to judge it by how the grain looks in the morning.
next time make sure you have enough time to prep it right.

I forgot to mention. I use the 30 minute boiled water bath method for LI. It makes the grain a bit drier so the Li and grain have the perfect water content. If you have alot of issues with Li and bacteria you may be over cooking your oats. Going slightly Lower than perfect moisture content can be beneficial with the use of liquids if your inoculating with more than 5cc of Li solution. I had prepped my Las batch with the boiling method and the bottoms of the jars got a little overly wet than I like after my initial Li pour. After I inoculate then pour my Li, I like shaking to where the Li coats all grains. You wouldn't see any pooling water at the bottom of the jars afterwards. If you see this, you may be pouring too much or you may want to adjust the moisture content in your jars by cooking less.

I let my oats dry a bit more for LI too...Makes sense. Oats are by far the easiest I've tried...Loving them right now...Thanks eat.

Hey... I am just wondering if I can dry the oats before loading them into jars in the first method or if their slight wetness serves a purpose during the sterilization?
