The grains looked really good. I'm a noob but from what i have seen in others grows the grain looks properly hydrated. I had maybe 4 or 5 total per jar of burst grains.
These were g2g on 8/9 and finished on 8/24 if i remember correctly.

No green, no wet spot bacteria. The grains are really hard to break up and a thick white non mycelium seems to bind on the oats. I've done 4 batches of jars and they all are about the same.

These are from my last batch.  4 jars of the 12 smelled bad and i chucked them. Another 4 didn't pass the shake test at 90%. They took about 14 days to fully colonize.

I go to grain after 4 transfers but maybe im transferring too large a piece of agar and including bacteria.

Smells like bacteria. Do you have any grain shots without growth?

Yeah I don't think its the grain.

Where are you getting your Oats? I got a 50 lb bag from Tractor Supply and they were shit! 20 jars all contaminate. I went to Rural King and got their Premium cleaned oats, and they are so much better. I had heard the Nutrena Racing Horse Oats are very good. Thanks for this.

back when oat preps were new and everybody was trying it, a bunch of folks seemed to notice that plain old dusty oats seemed to be a bit more troublesome than the triple cleaned race horse oats. i dont think there is any post making a hard line the sand about why or how it happens, but a lot of folks seemed to see the same issues with non-race horse oats. over time, people had less issues just using triple cleaned oats.

I have shitty oats and they ended up getting infested with bugs. I'm considering tossing the bag and sucking it up. Although I am thinking of using them because once boiled and pc'd there'll be nothing left of them

Throw a handful of DE diatomaceous earth in the bags when you first open it

I'm intrigued. What does that do? edit: oh that's for the bugs not the grains.

I was thinking about doing that. Luckily I have a bag of DE on hand because of a flea infestation. Fenway doesn't have fleas they said, he's had his drops this month they said. Well why the f&c$ is my house infested then :facepalm3:

I'm getting my ass kicked in rye right now...either all my strains are all contaminated with everything imaginable or it's the grain.

Are oats easier to work with than rye? Is it just whole oats..No hull is what I'm assuming...

Thanks in advance..I'm getting frustrated watching jars sweat and then turn colours...

I've heard great things about them myself. I plan on using rye in things that are harder to fuck up moisture content like pp5 bottle grows but using oats in jars, just as an extra layer of insurance. I believe the hulls MUST still be on the oats or they are worthless.

I would think rye would be less prone to contam than whole osts.  I never had any problems with rye, really.  Have you changed anything, new lids?

johhova,

are your grain jars all clumpy and mostly burst grain when you are done prepping it? do you have any images of what it looks like after your pressure cooked it? if so, it could be your over cooking it.

yeah i do the 25 minute rolling boll and no more.

also oats are fairly forgiving compared to other grain.

ham don't you have another older oat tek? i think we were discussing it when i first made this thread in my journal a while back.

Hi, eat.  Hope you are well, brother.  I remember what you are talking about.  What you are referring to wasn't a Tek, technically.  More of a research article over whole oats.  This was back when whole oats were becoming the rage.

Hi crispy.  Sorry about your luck, brother.  Try longer sterilization cycles.  With oats you are correct.  Whole oats are with the hulls.  Hulled oats are oats with the hull/husk removed.  Whole oats are what ya want.

The only changes have been the brand of rye...All my rye is organic so it can have a high endospore load from what I understand... I also soak for 24 hours. More potential issues there...My prep is solid... I dry on a screen before pc cycle...
I can't switch back to the old brand because its all gone until the new crop is in...Hence the oats idea.

The other change is an a/c unit in my spawn room to keep temps stable. I use SFD's and plastic lids and spawn bags...All of them have had contam issue at different times...I don't think the a/c could cause them.

Damn.  Tried a control jar or two?  Maybe up the pc time?  That's frustrating, koot.

Its allgood...Has to be figured out.

Skipping the soak, going to conventional rye and whole oats to see...and doing control jars.

you know i had been using one brand of wbs for over 10 years with no issues. pennington finch seed. one year, i had a horrible batch at the local walmart. i tried 10 different 50lb bags and everything i did contaminated like hell.

i ended up going to another walmart and getting the finch seed. this walmart was about 40 miles away. never had a contam again.

pretty crazy. you know if it were a batch or two i might say bad spawn. but consistently throwing out 100 quarts at a time. then making the switch and no problems at all after that.

i had to switch to popcorn for a while because of it lol..

i always get
Quote:

race horse oats(whole oats)

you could also add a dash of pickling lime(found in the canning section of your local mart) during your soak or boil.

that always worked well for me with dirty grain like wbs. i would rinse it off after the boil or warm water bath.

i have premium race horse oats and they got infested with meal bugs. last bag i bought already had the meal bugs. in the dead heat of the summer, your not going to find the other 50lb bags at the same supply store they have on hand clean either. i bought a bag a month before and the oats were fine. but once the summer heat hit. boom, bug city.

this is common. the eggs are already present in most grain, meal, flours.

its just a matter of temperature you store it at in order for germination.

you may not want to look this up, but if you look at the "allowed bug parts" per box of cereal and such. it is something like 50,000 insect parts per box. and i think x amount of rat hairs.

the seeds are there. its just a matter of storage.

one thing i recently found to repel meal bugs is a simple one. duct tape the bag shut. they get stuck to the duct tape. and i wrap the outside of the bag with a plastic bag tied tight.

i pour the oats into the boiled water and walla. kills all the meal bugs. then just pour those nasty floater fuckers off the top down the drain. or you can colonize them. colonized grain jars with them no problems. just some extra protein. i try to pour it off though.

also, i don't have any big issues with oats. i find them easier to prep and forgiving compared to many other grains. and my first trial with oats was 4-50lb bags. no contams! so i don't think its oats in general. maybe the shittier quality oats. i always tried race horse oats so that is all i can comment on. the shitty dirty oats must be pretty nasty. i saw some rolled oats once and didn't get them.

ive also had numerous items in my "triple cleaned" race horse oats.

rabbit food, straw, meal bugs, chunks of what looks like bird food ect ect.

i just pour off any of those floaters. which is very seldom that i see these things in a bag of oats. but it does happen.

Commodity grade oats can be seriously dirty. And have bits of whatever else in them. Burs, corn, soybeans, rabbit pellets, floor sweepings, straw. Other then the dust, it's mostly fibrous matter, so I was just cleaning and cleaning them prior to PC.

Bought a bag of cleaned oats, and much to my surprise, they aren't even dusty and I couldn't find a piece of corn. So we shall see if the new lids and new oats help with my issues.

I think the little gap on my plexi window in the SAB is a pretty big contributor to the contamination issues I have been having. Doing the 45 minute boiling soak on the grains and then 1:15 in the pc.

Should know in a week or so if things are getting better.

Where is the gap? I have a gap in mine. But I flip the tub upside down so the lid acts as the floor of my sab. It also allows more work space as this tub is wider at the top than bottom.  I think the gap is ok. I have open arm holes in mine. If the gap is on top. Flip your sab.
