When you need a strainer the size of a bucket, drill holes in a bucket.

I'm giving the 45 minute soak a try as well.
Have a stupid question though....With the PP5 lids, you don't have to use foil? I would love that.

It depends. The foil is said to keep water from wetting your filter, PP5 lids are often used without filters, as you can just unscrew them half an inch or so and that will allow for gas exchange.
I don't use PP5 lids though, so don't take my word on it. That's just what I've made up from whatever I read here.

No. I use synthetic filter discs cut into circles using a dime as a template. Although I would suggest cutting square pieces so you don't waste pieces of sfd. The holes drilled in the lids are down the center and 1/4". I'll update the op with the way I do lids for clarity.
Some of the filters get wet after the initial PC. But by the time they cool the next morning they are dry. This is before I take them out of the pc. It hasn't caused me any issues.

Well that is super cool. I started saving my aluminum foil, but one more thing to store and keep track of is still a bit of a pain. It's worth the $25 to have one less step and a solid lid instead of two pieces. I got sixteen lids for about $11, so I'll need some more, but it's a start.
I should have everything in a couple of days and then I will do this oat tek. Looking forward to it!

THIS IS HOW EAT ROCKS HIS LIDS:

I use RTV(high temp automotive) silicone to attach my SFD's(Synthetic Filter Discs) to my Ball Wide Mouth Quart lids. I think it would be better to cut the pieces into squares. when you use a circle template(I use a nickel or dime) you get wasted pieces. I drill 1/4" holes down the center in the lids. The lids do crack so keep a consistent speed till you push through the lid.
To me using these filters over other lids and filters is like the difference between riding a crappy old motor cycle and driving a brand new harley.
you could drive either and get from point A to point B. but which one would you want to drive or be seen in public driving? Also for the comfort and ease it provides having a brand new motorcycle.

Disregard the two filters. I used to have Whatman ports and SHIPS(self healing injection ports) in my lids. so all the old converted jars have two SFD's on them. This is how you want the lids to look. One filter right down the center.

For all the new jars I drill 1 hole right down the center.
Here we go, this has an assortment of old and new jar lids. The 1 hole central filtered jars are newer lids. The older double filters are old lids. You can see one blue SHIP in the image that was missed along the way. That will have to be switched out when i can remember haha.

This batch has more of the newer lids with holes down the center. You can see my rusted ass regular mouth 1/2 pint bands with pour lids with magnets on them. Another reason I prefer the cleanliness of the plastic lids.

In 8 years I have never had to change these filters once. I knocked off a few SFD's from a few lids by accident. I RTVed them back on. Maybe 3 total fell off of hundreds of jars. They do last. And I prefer the RTV because its sturdier and holds a better seal than the clear SHIT
ill update the op when i have time.

hey eat have you ever had problems with oats of a certain brand or oats with anti fungal/anti bacterial added? Im trying to narrow down where my contams are coming from and i cant tell if its my oats or agar at 4 transfers.

no. ive used about 8 different brands of oats.
some of them have hay, pet food, corn, rabbit food in them. i just pour it off the top and minimize any floaters. are you using different types of grain with luck or just oats? if your grains have a high percentage of burst grains and are clumpy. that is bad. you want the grain to roll over each other easily when you turn the jar.
after a day my grain jars or not too glossy and not too dull. just midway. there usually is no visible water on the grain. it looks consistent throughout.

It either all that, a compoundment of the aforementioned issues plus improper sterilize time, poor gas exchange, as well as hydration content of grains.

Hey Eat, those jars look great. Neat clean, and pleasing to look at. I'll get mine soon. But I have another question for you.
Since you only use one hole now, if you were to use a LC do you inoculate through the filter? And I am not going to be doing that right now, but hopefully once I get all my ducks in a row I can do that in the future.
Ham, what grain tek do you use?

Hi, Shroomy. To inoculate LC When lids aren't fitted with self injection healing ports the Lid is removed inside of sterile conditions, then replaced once you've squirted LC into the jar. I use an adaptation of a few oat teks. I'll write my own easy oat Tek here in a few days as been planning. Thanks.

Okay. That makes perfect sense.
Next prep I am trying is going to be the 45 minute boiling soak. I'm also hoping to get one of those swanky colanders that goes over the sink. That's perfect!
Thanks!

The 45 minute hard boil is what I do. Only I do a half an hour. Past a half an hour, kernels start busting, and no thank you, please. Good luck, brother, but you're not going to need it. Whole oat prep is very very simple/black & white.

Right on. Thanks, man. I will check the oats at the 30 minute point. Appreciate the tip!
I really think the problems I have been having are grain prep and GE related. So addressing those two things should help. Also environmental contams have been out of this world, but adding a little bleach to my soap water spray and using Lysol improve my agar success. I'll get it.
Very much appreciate the help many have given, particularly Eat! Deeply!!
I've been drowning here, and positive support has been fantastic.

yeah like ham said. i flame the needle, lift the lid, squirt some lc in. put the lid back on.
johhova,
are your grain jars all clumpy and mostly burst grain when you are done prepping it? do you have any images of what it looks like after your pressure cooked it? if so, it could be your over cooking it.
yeah i do the 25 minute rolling boll and no more.
also oats are fairly forgiving compared to other grain.
ham don't you have another older oat tek? i think we were discussing it when i first made this thread in my journal a while back.
