If the lid comes loose after the pressure cook. Once jars have cooled and you are about to shake them, you can use a hot pad not heating pad..so that you dont burn your hands. I generally allow the jars to fully cool. But at times you may not have the time to wait. So if you shake the jars while they are still warm use proper protection.

day 7.

day 9

spawn time.

another batch. so far 100% success! im a little rusty but its still working. love oats!
batch 2 day 3

day 7

the above jars were all done with liquid inoculants. they were all prepared using the rolling boil method. the first batch had a ratio of 1 plate per 1/4 pint water, blended up and inoculated 20 quarts each. these colonized in 14-15 days.
the 2nd batch had 1 plate per 1/4 pint water blended up and poured into 10 quarts. these colonized in 7 days.

you could let them sit in the strainer longer and allow all of the water to run off. even wait an hour or two and that might solve the issue. ive seen people run fans on their grain. its really not necessary. it could speed up the time, but you can make some small adjustments to the way you prep the grain and do away with that step. personally i don't want to wait longer. time is of the essence.
i use this method the same way for LI, a2g, p2g, inoculation, injection of stem tissue ect.

The only whole oats I have found locally so far contain a preservative called propionic acid. Does anyone know how that would affect mycelium growth?

I was trying to say your way is better then the way i used to run oats id boil till the grain was jellied in the middle i notice your way they are still some what white and i can load still a little wet and they come out perfect

cool. yeah if you cook for long periods of time your still cooking the grain.
best part of this method is i can do 3-4 batches in one full day. no soaking, no waiting. less than 3 hours and my jars are cooling on the shelf. i only have a 10 quart pc and can do 30-40 quarts in a day using this method. no switching out pressure cookers or anything. if i had to wait 8 hours or more for grain it wouldn't work into the daily schedule.
this method is convenient for free weekend and evening work. you can do a batch before you go to sleep and its ready in the morning. or start friday evening and do an all day run on saturday and have enough quart jars for plenty of myco work.
ive used oats this way with a2g, g2g, tiger drop, p2g, and liquid inoculation. it all works well and i don't adjust anything in the prep. if im limited on time. i do the slightly faster method.

they are cheaper than the glasses you get at the store and if they break its like 1$ a piece. opposed to 3-4$ per cup you buy at ikea or crate and barrel.

Just tried method 1 yesterday, let the jars cool down over night. Stoked to see how it works out. Can't beat 50lbs of grain for $13!

Ya i had like 10 strainers arpund the house at once drying and seen my unused sgfv sitting there works great for oats if youre gonna use smaller grain youbwould need a window screen to prevent them from falling through or just drill a bunch of tiny holes
