I Hate ATM Machines

So I went to the cash ATM today and took out the max cash limit that one can withdraw in one day. As my money was being dispensed, the last $20 bill got caught / stuck in the ATM and I couldn't easily pull it out. I gently tugged on it and eventually it ripped in half. I was able to fish out the remaining chunk and was able to get both pieces to the bill, making it somewhat complete.
I'm assuming the bill was already torn and ended up snagging when it was being dispensed. First time something like this has ever happened to me.
The store was closed and there was no one to assist me so I just went on my merry way.
Now I have a shitty $20 bill that is taped together with clear shipping tape and I'm thinking someone won't accept it due to the condition. I'll probably end up trying to pass it off to some retarded teenager at a drive thru.

Who is responsible for destroying damaged bills? I'm sure banks can't necessarily pass them on again to the general public once received in that condition. Who ends up eating the cost of the currency?

I think central banks replace damaged bills for banks... but I'm not 100% sure of that

You must've never worked retail. Some of the conditions of bills that come through are fucking incredible. One I swear went through a lawnmower and was more tape than bill.

I've heard only the larger half has value. Some people might refuse it but I think technically it has to be accepted as a legal note. You could always just take it to a bank and they would exchange it if you feel awkward about it, they'll take it.

This.
Even if you lose the smaller part, as long as you have over 50% of the bill, banks have to take it.

um so you have one bad experience with an ATM and now you hate them? i mean it was not even that bad, you still got your money.
i mostly use them now to cash checks. pretty fucking sweet if you work until after banks close (and sleep during the day before work) to get paid and still able to deposit your check and hit the bar after work.

Knowing this makes me feel more confident with my situation.
Kinda reminds me of trying to pay for something with 2 lbs of mixed change. Nobody wants to take it but legally required to.

noones actually legally required to take your change it really just depends on company policy, or how nice the cashier is and how much time they're willing to spend counting it

I was under the impression that a business is legally required to accept change as a payment since it is legal tender.
What if all businesses refused to accept change? The markets would collapse and the economy would implode upon itself!

then they would have to set all their prices at an even dollar with no change. but that would be really hard, because taxes.
have you ever tried paying with 100$ bill? most small places wont accept them. some places will even turn away 50s
noone is required to accept your money. even if you have a 100% legit and real, 20$ bill, the cashier can refuse it if he wants to if he thinks it looks fake or something

I think most, if not all, businesses will accept a benjamin. Now for the business to be able to make proper change for a $100 is a different story

thats a good point. alot of the times it is just because they cant or dont wanna make change.
but still, my point is that they arent legally required to accept your money
