Pretty much that 100% with oats which is why I like them. I can see a great plate and go "Fuck yeah." and boil grains that same night or I can meticulously plan my time and soak them to hydration.
That's why I fell in love.

I do see a few bursters in there... wonder when that happens, or if they're already like that straight out of the bag?

Straight out of the bag for me. The day I got the oats I was carrying two bags and I just kind of threw them down the stairs . I was like "The tough ones will survive." like a loving mother.

To me filling the pot twice. Lifting it twice, boiling twice, putting the heat on twice, pouring the water out twice is more work. Im still lifting double.

You can just not boil it twice, and not dry it, and it would probably work the same.
Lifting something twice is still less work than watching something boil for 20-30 minutes straight. Of course, I'm defining work as "time spent doing shit I would rather not be doing", not "amount of shit I had to pick up".
But yeah I guess it could be considered a pain in the ass to do everything twice. I just hate babysitting stuff. And nah I haven't room temp soaked because the heat helps the water penetrate the grain better IME. I never really thought to myself "I wish this would take even longer".

I didnt watch it at all on the boil actually. I brought it to rolling boil( takes 22 mins in my big pot). Then set it on medium for 10 mins. Strain and load. Took 32 mins.

If I don't watch during my boil the bottom grains in the pot get all the heat and the top ones are just like meh. Results in a lot of burst grains with every other spawn choice.

so far ive found, corn, beans, brown chunks of what looks like some kind of pellet, straw. and it says triple cleaned. but these oats are as dirty as the wbs i get.
race horse oats. some right out of the bag look like that when i put em in water they show better.

I also mix wheat with my oats and still prep the same way. I also add 20% bran to my grain and a fair bit of fresh un brewed coffee. My recover times with LI inoculations hav improved drastically since I started adding bran.

It's not about speed for me. I use LI because it lets me inoculate 40 quarts of spawn with a single plate.

Muda shows up! Noc, you got quite a thread here. Well done.
I think I've diagnosed my problem. I can see agar in two jars. Nothing doing. I think it's because the grains aren't hydrated. The soak and barely boiled just doesn't get it done. I've got WBS going, now, so I'll see if that works, and tomorrow start a soak on oats with a boil.
Can't think of any other reason a very active culture should go nowhere.

So what you're saying is that it is in fact possible to fuck this tek up? Because I've never had that issue.

Believe me, if there's a way to screw up, I'll find it. I could fuck up a one car funeral procession. Not sure I can think of any other way it's not working. I had active cultures, different strains, which have produced no colonizing after 10 days. If it's not a moisture problem, then what else could it be? There is no sign of any kind of contamination. The grains no longer look plump, I think, but that could be projection. My mini-mono which is fruiting well came from the same oat tech, but in half-pint jars as I had the very small PC at that time. Dunno, man. I still prefer this tek, but for some reason it's not working very well for me.
As they say in the science biz, more research is necessary.

Unless every kernel has burst and the grain in the jar is one solid form, I don't see moisture being the reason for your failures. What kind of inoculant are you using?

Mike, I used LC, which might not have been viable, agar to grain, in three cases, different strains all very good at the time of inoculation. Nada, zip. I can see two of the drops, and neither is doing anything. Maybe more than ten days to begin? No contams. Sorta doesn't make sense.
Thanks for the help.
