Questions on birthing
    #22158255 - 08/28/15 08:14 PM (8 years, 5 months ago)

So im fixing to birth my cakes and I was told im supposed to soak them for 24 hours and roll them in dry verm first, is that true? If it is do I use cold water? Also how many times do I need to fan out a shotgun style chamber? Thanks.

Yes dunk and roll, whatever temp it comes out of the tap is fine, and fanning isn't even entirely necessary.

You just wanna do it after you mist, for like 4-5 seconds, to cycle the air out with fresh air, to trigger the evaporation process.  You don't even have to do that though because it'll happen on its own.

Yes, soak them, then roll in dry verm.  Wait a few hours, then mist the cakes.

If you YouTube "Lets Grow Mushrooms", part 3 (I think) talks about this and shows you how to do it.

Is it ok to leave a fully colonized cake in a jar for 8 days?

Yeah, sure it's okay.  You need to leave it alone for a week after full colonization anyways.  Just keep an eye out for pins in the jar and be gentler with them if they've started forming.

I left some jars a few days over their time and this is all that happened:

Is it still ok to submerge them if they have pins?

Should I put the perlite in the day before or the day I put the cakes in?

After you birth your cakes, you should let them soak for 24 hours.  The next day, wet the perlite in a strainer making sure you've washed off the dust and let it drain well.  Fill your fruiting chamber with the perlite and then put the cakes in.
