substitute for spawn bags?
    #22154862 - 08/28/15 03:45 AM (8 years, 5 months ago)

have been using rye as a substrate in some pint jars. and I know that spawn bags are like 40 cents or something like that but I have a crap ton of oven bags. I was wondering if I use use these as a substitute for the spawn bags... I can only fit 4 jars in my pressure cooker and im trying to find a way to get more out of each time I PC my casing and substrate. I can probably fit 5 times the amount of material in the PC if I can use the oven bags. and if it is possible like the normal spawn bags will 2 paper clips be good enough of keep it closed?
a lot of the information I can find is about pastoralizing it in the oven but I would feel better if I could use them with the PC.

Spawn bags have a filter patch for ge and usually an inoculation port.  You can spend a lot of time and effort with your oven bags but why?

Oven bags have tiny perforations to let steam escape. These will let contams in.

You can only fit 4 pint jars in your pc at once? If you want to do bags and increase volume production you're gonna need a bigger PC. Most people on here pasteurize their substrate because it will be spawned in open air, and pasteurizing leaves behind the good bacteria that protect it from contams. If you are PCing and sterilizing your substrate, you need to spawn aseptically. A decent sized flow hood really helps with this. Coir & verm only subs have been used sterile with open air spawning, but anything else in the mix and you need to spawn aseptically.

I pretty much do everything sterile. But I have bigass flowhoods and bigass sterilizers.
