Does the microwave pasturize or sterilize the 60/40 verm/coir mixture? I dont feel like cleaning out my mircrowave or working in the dirty kitchen. could i throw it in a pillow casing and pasturize for an hour at 170? Or could I load it into canning jars and pc? Would excess moisture get in? Is sterilizing or pasturizing preferred with the casing mixture?

Casing is best pasteurized. For small quantities, I use the pc, but don't put the weight on the lid, so no pressure is allowed to build. Just load your jars, put them in the pc, and let them steam without pressure for 30 minutes. Shut off the heat, and when cool they're ready to use.

i always PC my casing media aswell,it's worth the extra effort to garantee sterility.

I've never dealt with casing material but I know manuer is best left pasturized and not sterilized. Not sure if the casing materials share the same sort of benificial bacterias or whatver properties that make poo so unprone to contamination, though.
I once scraped leftover corn that had spilled while I was spawning other casings into a jar and literally threw in some poo and it colonized fine with no infection. Quite amazing really. No sterility whatsoever.

Do you have to wait until the bulk substrate is 100% colonized before you add the casing mixture on top? The reason im asking is because i have 2 and one is lagging behind, because it has less spawn to substrate. Im thinking I might have to case early in order to block out airborn contams with an non nutritious layer, ya dig? Can I do this? What are some of the cons of early casing?
Also, when they say 40% coir, 60% verm by volume, is this after they've absorbed moisture? Because the coir says it expands up to 10 times, which is a shit ton.
THANKS!

yes mix them the once they are moist, also mix them the other way around 60 coir 40 verm,or even more coir and less verm,i only use straight coir for casing now and find it's better on it's own than mixed.
