Just watched the Kurt Cobain documentary Montage of Heck
    #22152037 - 08/27/15 03:24 PM (8 years, 5 months ago)

I was a kid growing up when Nirvana burst onto the scene. Yeah, I liked some of their stuff I guess. I mean it was okay. But damn, were they really THAT groundbreaking? Like MTV or Rolling Stone or whomever saying that Cobain was the John Lennon of that generation, and that Nirvana was just pure, next level genius music.

Was Nirvana seriously overrated, or was it just me? What am I missing?

Anyway, had Cobain not killed himself at such a young age, I wonder how they would've fared further down the road. His death has really seemed to add to the aura & mystique of his (and to Nirvana as a whole) and raised them to a stratospheric level in hindsight, and I really got my questions as to how deserved it all really is.

People worshiped the ground that guy walked on. There were other good bands in the grunge scene, but they were THE band in the grunge scene. I watched that movie too, I thought it was pretty informative. It's just sad that a guy who has everything I've ever wanted was still so miserable that he ended his own life at the mere age of 27

I wonder if psychedelics could have helped him at all. Maybe one good ibogaine experience. Sure, stomach ulcers are probably hell but it's not like everyone who gets em kills themselves.

Right place, right time - that explains the success of Nirvana.

Now try splaining that to these punk ass brats running round that practice Cobain worship and think that he changed the face of music forever, like they were alive then or not old enough to remember the truth.

Yeah man, it's pretty crazy. He supposedly despised the superstardom, yet when he killed himself, one of the last lines in the suicide note was "it's better to burn out than to fade away". So even though he hated the stardom, he also couldn't bare the thought of trending downward from that status.

He was a true artist. I think his emotion, love and passion for music and art really poured out of him. More so than the other grunge bands...they never seemed as heartfelt to me.

With that being said, you gotta check out the documentary Soaked in Bleach..he didn't kill himself.

Yep. That's how I remember it. I always felt they just got anointed by the hype machine. That was back when MTV was actually relevant (they still were shit, but relevant), and MTV worshipped them.

I always thought they were pretty average myself. Decent tracks here & there, but groundbreaking & genius? I just didn't get it.

I've heard the conspiracy theories, but didn't everybody in the band (and anybody else close to it) all say unequivocally that he killed himself? At least in their opinions, anyway. And they knew him better than anybody.

I love Kurt Cobain, always have - I was born near Seattle and listened to him and grunge growing up - and he'll always be one of my favorite musicians. Having said that, Nirvana is the most overrated band of all fucking time. Nearly all their radio songs suck and are completely overplayed, you couldn't pay me to listen to Smells like Teen Spirit. Everything off of MTV Unplugged is sheer brilliance however. I'd say he's one of my favorite singers.

I've been offered heroin many, many times and always turned it down in protest essentially because of my awareness of what it did to people (even as a kid listening to grunge) like Kurt Cobain, Layne Staley, etc.

Every famous musician who died from their own hands or from an accident (like Hendrix) it was said that they were murdered. It's probably all bullshit but interesting, I mean Kurt did have a song called "I hate myself and I want to die" so take that for what you will. Kurt's is probably one of the more substantiated murder claims actually - really quite interesting to read about, though who gives a shit it was 21 years ago.

The Beatles were also Kurt's favorite band, or at least one of them, so the constant comparison's are ridiculous. Same with SRV and Hendrix, Cobain and SRV would have been upset if they were said to be 'better' than their idols - which is all subjective anyways.

Definitely agree here, that unplugged performance was pretty fucking stout. Seeing some of the footage from that again on the documentary was cool and brought back some memories.

I think he should have done way, way more acoustic/low key stuff rather than the semi-punk/grunge crap they became famous for. Nirvana worked much better as a large/more or less unplugged band.

They weren't even good @ grunge - though was anybody ever really good at grunge? They were just the biggest.

Alice in chains was damn good.

And he was actually planning on quitting and expressed interest in doing acoustic stuff. There releasing a posthumous album of his old acoustic unreleased stuff.

I like nirvana, EDM, grateful dead, hip hop, classical, world music, and several other types.  I fucking love music...anyway...

About the topic, yes I think nirvana is over rated, an awesome band for sure, but over rated.  If you like nirvana, make sure to check out the pixies and meat puppets, cobain loved both bands and I think you will too.

umm drake clearly pays thousands for ghost writers to write him up something "fire".

he also just picks and chooses his beats. The ONLY talent drake has, is performing.

makes me sick how everyone just blindly buys into the hype.

Sugar hill gang were the first hip hoppers of the genre back in the 80s i believe.

I love nirvana and use to think they were overrated...but then I dug beyond the popular tunes and there's a lot of great music and lyrics most people don't know about IMO.

And by the way, speaking of documentaries, I caught the Nas Time is Illmatic documentary as well last night.

It was excellent. Anybody who's a Nas fan should check it out if they haven't already.

Well yeah, you'd have to be a Nas fan to enjoy it. And he's not your average rapper of today's standards. He actually came across very well spoken and humble.

IMHO, Tupac IS hiphop.

"Tupac Resurrection" is one of my favorite documentaries.

Illmatic really is pretty much the best hiphop album of all time.

"Me against the world" and "Killuminati the 7 day theory" rivals it, IMO

I use to really be into Nirvana growing up. Used to trade bootlegs and compilations online thru mail before there were P2P sites. The live stuff is amazing and sides / rarities are some of the best (If you Must, D7, Return of a Rat, Marigold, Here She Comes Now)

I would really like to see the Montage to Heck documentary but I'll have to wait for it to be available on Amazon or Redbox

I live in the town he was born. His little park memorial thing is literally 2 blocks away. And like 3 blocks from the house he grew up in. Chill there all the time with the homies. Drinking. If you really cared for me too i can take a picture of the park tomorrow if you want it has a pretty cool statue of a guitar.

It isn't much its only a couple tables and the statue. But it's right on the wishkah river and a hella chill spot to just kick back with good company and drink a beer.

Or i dunno if it's the house he grew up in. As a kid then went and got famius. And got out of here. Maybe he came back and did it there. I dunno if that's the house he committed suicide in though.

I guess Nirvana is somewhat overrated, but I like some of their stuff and I find a lot of the other music from that time period that gets lumped in as being the same genre to be unlistenably bad (e.g. Pearl Jam.)

I don't think Nirvana is overrated - they just really weren't that technical and Kurt didn't really have the traditional vocal range but they produced amazing music for what they were working with.

But then again... I like early Pearl Jam

I never paid much attention to Nirvana when they were doing their thing.  I remember the days long thing MTV had covering his death though.  Suicide hotline numbers and stuff.

Years later I was spending a lot of time reading musician autobiographies, and came across a biography on Nirvana, and "kurts notebooks".  So I bought the Unplugged CD..

I have to say, a lot of the lyrics hit.  A lot were mopey and depressing too though.  Really unique tho, it has a distinct feel to it.

At the end of the day I think he just needed to get away, he seemed pretty fragile all around.  I dont think he really had that, fuck you fight the world mentality.  He seemed pretty sensitive too it all.

Either way, what's done is done.  I like a good number of their songs, but remember when they released the song "You Know You're Right".. apparently recorded a few days before he killed himself..  that's probably my 'one Nirvana song'..

There were some rumors that Kurt detested Grohl near the end and wanted to get rid of him (for personal reasons), but tolerated him because he was such a good drummer.

Then again, according to some of the stuff you read, Kurt supposedly detested anybody and everybody near the end.

Sounds like aberdeen to me.

It has a cool history though. A lot of houses around here are essentially studios. It was a boom town surrounding the logging industry. But it dried up as the machinery they used were used for big trees. And new laws that Washington put up basically made all of that shit useless. The factories are still around town but I've never seen them running. Just sitting there.

The mall is 75% unvacant it's kind of cool to walk in. It's so quiet. Basically has the sears and the movie theatre. Downtown has so many open stores for rent its basically a ghost town.

Theres really not much to do. Walmart moved in and we have all the fast food places. But like 5 actual restaurants. I have 8 years of restaurant experience but i work in a crab processing plant in Washington.

Drugs moved in as the people weren't snapping necks and cashin checks anymore. And when the young people who were growing up there's not much else to do might as well get high.

It was the same in alaska. Boredome especially during winter. might as well do drugs.

It's actually a really cool little town the scenery is gorgeous. Your 20 miles from the ocean. But it just died. I mushroom pick and do all sorts of fun things. Camp, swim, fish. And this summer has just been spectacular.

Alice in chains was damn good.

And he was actually planning on quitting and expressed interest in doing acoustic stuff. There releasing a posthumous album of his old acoustic unreleased stuff.

I'd say Alice in Chains acoustic/slower stuff is way better than any of their grungey stuff too . Jar of Flies for example >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Dirt.

Their self titled album from 95-96 is BOMB. their best heavy shit for sure

Buzz Osborne from the Melvin's was good friends with Cobain and he said that montage of heck is a bs representation.

Cobain made up most of the lyrics on the spot and frequently said they didn't have too much meaning.

Towards the end Cobain didn't like grohls drumming and probably resented him for not being an addict. Cobain said he preferred the previous drummer's style. I can see why. Chad Channing especially shines on the song Negative Creep on the Bleach album.
