Just watched the Kurt Cobain documentary Montage of Heck
    #22152037 - 08/27/15 03:24 PM (8 years, 5 months ago)

I was a kid growing up when Nirvana burst onto the scene. Yeah, I liked some of their stuff I guess. I mean it was okay. But damn, were they really THAT groundbreaking? Like MTV or Rolling Stone or whomever saying that Cobain was the John Lennon of that generation, and that Nirvana was just pure, next level genius music.

Was Nirvana seriously overrated, or was it just me? What am I missing?

Anyway, had Cobain not killed himself at such a young age, I wonder how they would've fared further down the road. His death has really seemed to add to the aura & mystique of his (and to Nirvana as a whole) and raised them to a stratospheric level in hindsight, and I really got my questions as to how deserved it all really is.

People worshiped the ground that guy walked on. There were other good bands in the grunge scene, but they were THE band in the grunge scene. I watched that movie too, I thought it was pretty informative. It's just sad that a guy who has everything I've ever wanted was still so miserable that he ended his own life at the mere age of 27

I wonder if psychedelics could have helped him at all. Maybe one good ibogaine experience. Sure, stomach ulcers are probably hell but it's not like everyone who gets em kills themselves.

Right place, right time - that explains the success of Nirvana.

Now try splaining that to these punk ass brats running round that practice Cobain worship and think that he changed the face of music forever, like they were alive then or not old enough to remember the truth.

Yeah man, it's pretty crazy. He supposedly despised the superstardom, yet when he killed himself, one of the last lines in the suicide note was "it's better to burn out than to fade away". So even though he hated the stardom, he also couldn't bare the thought of trending downward from that status.

He was a true artist. I think his emotion, love and passion for music and art really poured out of him. More so than the other grunge bands...they never seemed as heartfelt to me.

With that being said, you gotta check out the documentary Soaked in Bleach..he didn't kill himself.

Yep. That's how I remember it. I always felt they just got anointed by the hype machine. That was back when MTV was actually relevant (they still were shit, but relevant), and MTV worshipped them.

I always thought they were pretty average myself. Decent tracks here & there, but groundbreaking & genius? I just didn't get it.

I've heard the conspiracy theories, but didn't everybody in the band (and anybody else close to it) all say unequivocally that he killed himself? At least in their opinions, anyway. And they knew him better than anybody.

I love Kurt Cobain, always have - I was born near Seattle and listened to him and grunge growing up - and he'll always be one of my favorite musicians. Having said that, Nirvana is the most overrated band of all fucking time. Nearly all their radio songs suck and are completely overplayed, you couldn't pay me to listen to Smells like Teen Spirit. Everything off of MTV Unplugged is sheer brilliance however. I'd say he's one of my favorite singers.

I've been offered heroin many, many times and always turned it down in protest essentially because of my awareness of what it did to people (even as a kid listening to grunge) like Kurt Cobain, Layne Staley, etc.

Every famous musician who died from their own hands or from an accident (like Hendrix) it was said that they were murdered. It's probably all bullshit but interesting, I mean Kurt did have a song called "I hate myself and I want to die" so take that for what you will. Kurt's is probably one of the more substantiated murder claims actually - really quite interesting to read about, though who gives a shit it was 21 years ago.

The Beatles were also Kurt's favorite band, or at least one of them, so the constant comparison's are ridiculous. Same with SRV and Hendrix, Cobain and SRV would have been upset if they were said to be 'better' than their idols - which is all subjective anyways.

Definitely agree here, that unplugged performance was pretty fucking stout. Seeing some of the footage from that again on the documentary was cool and brought back some memories.

I think he should have done way, way more acoustic/low key stuff rather than the semi-punk/grunge crap they became famous for. Nirvana worked much better as a large/more or less unplugged band.

They weren't even good @ grunge - though was anybody ever really good at grunge? They were just the biggest.

Alice in chains was damn good.

And he was actually planning on quitting and expressed interest in doing acoustic stuff. There releasing a posthumous album of his old acoustic unreleased stuff.

I'd say Alice in Chains acoustic/slower stuff is way better than any of their grungey stuff too . Jar of Flies for example >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Dirt.

It was cool music during my HS years for sure. I'll probably watch it, but I'm not gonna go see it in the theater.
