Jack-O-Lantern Mushrooms!
    #22151982 - 08/27/15 03:15 PM (8 years, 5 months ago)

Habitat:
Growing off of an oak tree, from the base and from the roots.

Gills:
Orange gills.

Stem:
Orange cremesicle colored stems up until the gills which are orange. Stems feel firm\dense.

Cap:
Caps flatten out to rather large sizes.

Spore print color:
Will try to print one for the hell of it.

Bruising:
None that I can tell from handling one of them.

Other information:
Scent of the mushroom: Pleasant mushroomy smell.

I am 99% sure these are jack-o-lantern mushrooms, just would like confirmation. They are too close to the streetlights to ever see their bioluminescence.

2-3 years ago orange mushrooms grew out of this same tree. But they seemed different. Almost chicken of the woods like, but I know that's not what they were. I now think that when they were spotted years ago it was at a much later stage of growth and the caps had fully fanned out and almost looked like a bracket fungus. I may have some old pics of that, I posted them here. Here is the link: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/16912044/page/23

Pics:

Pic of the same cluster with flash:

Gill shot:

Here's a pic of the mushroom I took the gill shot of laying on top of the biggest cluster.

I wish these were edible, they smell quite good. But that's apparently one of the reasons why people confuse them with chantrelles sometimes and get sick. Pretty cool to have a bioluminescent mushroom growing naturally on my property.

They are looking just like they did 3 years ago when they were first spotted now.

I cloned the mushroom I plucked for the gill shot in the OP to 10 plates. We'll see what happens. I'm interested to see what the mycelium looks like. I don't think the mycelium of this species is bioluminescent like Pan Stip.

From my experience with Omphalotus nidiformis mycelium, the mycelium is not luminescent. And I don't know about O.nidiformis, but with O.illudens only the gills are luminescent, where with P.stipticus it is the entire mushroom including the mycelium.

Yeah, that's what my research indicates, just bioluminescent gills. What color is the mycelium? Is it white? I'm kinda expecting an orange creme kinda color based on the inner flesh of the mushroom I took samples from, but I know it usually doesn't work out that way.

If I recall the O.nidiformis started out white but turned slightly orange yellow with age. My cloning attempts with O.illudens did not work out, I think I got to the mushrooms a little too late last year.

Let me know if you want one of my clone samples when they pan out. I think I got them at a good stage this year.

My cloning attempt appears to have gone well.

I took 10 inner tissue samples of the fruit I plucked and dropped them on 10 petris. The recipe was a simple MEA formula, 10g LME and 10g Agar to 500ml water. The inner tissue was a nice vibrant orange color, like the caps. After a couple days on the petris that color started to go way dark brown, almost black. I thought the samples weren't going to take, there was no mycelium coming off of the tissue samples yet at that point and the coloration of the tissue was a bit concerning. A few days later white fluffy growth began to spring forth from a couple of the samples. After a couple more days all samples showed the same growth. Now they are all racing across the plates. I'll make another transfer or 2 and then put it into storage for some rainy day.

The growth is white, with a slight yellow tint I think. Kinda hard to tell.

If anyone wants a bit of the culture, let me know.

I'll post some pics of the plates tonight.

Yup. In Omphalotus illudens only the gills glow. Other species the whole thing will glow.

So, I took 10 tissue samples to 10 plates.

They all grew out nicely. I transferred 2 plates to 5 new plates each.

Here are 8 of 10 that I did not transfer further. This is what the mycelium looks like after its grown out and sat and aged a little bit.

Here are the plates I transferred the other 2 to and the plates transferred from.

The dark brown plates are made using water that oak stump grindings were boiled in. The other plates are MEA It looks like this particular mycelium likes the Oak MEA a little better. The oak in the water is from a tree that was less than 50 feet from the tree these mushrooms were growing on. I made these Oak MEA plates about a year ago! I made several batches just to have when needed.

Slanted away some clean culture for a rainy day.
