Okay I'll just go to the store and look for the bag that says whole oats, don't feel like paying for the extra shipping online.

EDIT: Lol nvm, the closest store is like 40 miles away.

I believe both the rolled and whole oats both have a purple label.

Is whole oat the same thing as whole grain over here?

I mixed my free wheat in with the rest of my oats. I decided to cook them the same as I would with just the oats. Both the oats and wheat have turned out excellent. Get to g2g a master clone jar tonight. I haven't g2g'd spawn in about 8 months or so.

There is no need for that long of a boil. For every cup of grain, add a cup of water to the pot. Bring to a boil. Turn off burner and put on lid. Let sit for 20 minutes. Strain, jar and then pc. I've found better results when I don't over hydrate the grain.

Now, we're talking. This perked up my ears. Overhydrating? Can you expand on this, Mike? What have you found? Have you experimented with longer and shorter times, which is why you settled on 20 mins? You don't cold soak at all?

Expiring minds want to know!

:takingnotes:

EDIT: I should have read the rest of the thread. I should have known there would suddenly be a ton of information to sort through, and end up agreeing with taGyo. There are a lot of ways that work. The only way that doesn't work is overcooking. I'm sure I'm undercooking, and it still works.

Go figure.

EDIT: When I get home from work today, I will post two pics. Both have been noc'd up with the same clone culture on the same day but one batch of grain was boiled longer than the other. One is about a day away from full colonization and the other still has about 4-5 days to go. Guess which one colonized the quickest?

Whole oats are the uncut, unsteamed, unrolled oat groat. In many cases, whole oats are cut with steel cutters -- into two or three pieces -- to make steel-cut oats. As they are made from unprocessed, whole grains, whole oats have a round, slightly bulbous texture. Rolled oats, meanwhile, are steel cut oats that have been steamed and rolled flat. They are medium-small in size and cook more quickly than whole oats. While whole oats, have a nuttier taste and a chewier texture, cooked rolled oats are very soft and mush easily.

Wouldn't exploded grains and over plump grains be considered over hydrated? I've noticed the more moisture that I try to cram into the grain, the more problems I have. Over hydrated grains lose integrity. Because of the thick hull on the oats, it is not as easy to fuck up as when hydrating rice or millet but I seem to find that when preparing grain, less is more.

I've always done a 30-45 minute boil, I have done Inoc's method and I've done Muda's method and all seem to colonize just fine. I'd need a good isolate to really test the difference though. If your findings are not based on an isolate with data behind it then it could just be the culture rather then the hydration method.

For instance, if you had three different agar plates and knocked them to three different grain jars of varying moisture levels the results wouldn't matter because their are no dependent variables.

These are the kind that they have at the feedstore where the rye is at two towns over.  In town there's a feed store that has the bag of whole oats in the purple bag.

The one with the proper moisture contenet upon loading into the vessels is the one that's colonizing the best.  Guess what happens to myce when their substrate is too wet or too dry??

The cultivator is in control of how hydrated the grains are upon loading into media vessels than into your PC.  If you forced more moisture into one batch of grains over another the solution to get the grains that have more moisture in them will need to placed out longer to dry the surface of the grain before loading.

Blue Oysters in a 106 quart monotub.  LC to whole oats to pasteurized wheat straw.
