Chicken of the woods / Laetiporus sulphureus

Does anyone have any idea of how long "chicken of the woods" remains edible? I have found three separate spots last month that have rather large colonies of this species.
They were in their prime, from what I could tell when I took these pictures. I did not pick them at the time and now I am itching to get back out there and take the hatchet to them...
However it has been a month and a half since these pictures were taken. It is a rather long drive and about 13 miles of hiking to collect all three spots.
Anyone have any clue? If they are most likely still viable to eat, I would have maybe 50 lbs or so to stock in the deep freeze...
I am not having much luck in what I'm finding in my literature. I guess if I could wait until they come back next year. Or I could also just go and check it anyway despite the extensive drive and cost to get there.

My money says they have already begun decomposition but that doesnt mean there havent been more fruitings since that time. Chances are you will find more but possibly at different locations.
I just picked a monster at my cabin and brought it home. Fried up a bit in butter the other night...mmmmmmm..... yummy.

No way I would've left those out there. Most of the time when it comes to mushrooms, when you snooze, you lose. But as stated, there's quite possibly more out there. And if nothing else, you get a nice walk in the woods!

All those chickens I would consider past prime in the photos. But I am a snob. I prefer chickens that are still growing while those are totally done growing. I don't know where you are located but in a month or so we will start to see maitake and fall chickens. Summer chickens are rarer here.

Yea since your TN I am definitely in your area. One of the patches is in TN. The others are north Georgia. This was during a period of NO rain and high heat. I was surprised to find something at all. Fall you say? I will probably go see if there's more after another good rain or so.

Hopefully there have been more fruitings. There was so much at each patch I am guessing there may be more fruiting with this last few rains.

I was in transition of living spaces. I could have picked them but wouldn't have had a place to store them. At the time my stuff was in storage and I was driving from state park to state park from Ohio to Georgia hiking every trail they had. I wouldn't say I was able to hit up all state parks but I was definitely able to give up smoking, which was my whole intention for two months of non-stop hiking. Now that I have a place to freeze them, I am thinking I will go back.
Thanks for the replies, appreciate it
I am thinking I will go back anyway at least to the closer one. Its only a 2.5 hour drive and a mile or so hike.
If it doesn't look decomposed I will post what I find.
