My new 140 gallon pressure cooker, around 529 liters * 2
    #22149497 - 08/26/15 11:29 PM (8 years, 5 months ago)

Hey there, this is my huge ass custom pressure cooker ,
Cost in parts and labor $1,000.

1: 2 pressure regulators through Amazon
2. 140 gallon propane tank.
3. Man way door from muller made in USA .
4: pressure weight and stem it sits on are for an AA pressure cooker.

I made this because after watching RR''s steam 55 gallon drum  method takes 8 hours to serialize, that I needed something a lot faster and with more room. I also needed something that would not use so much propane. This set up takes 1:30 mins to reach 15 psi  and takes 1/4 of a tank per run.
This unit holds 15-20 12 lb sawdust bags.

Hey thanks . I have 80 bags of shiitake sawdust blocks to make .I will get new pics up and explain more. I listed the parts. Hardest part was the door so  I farmed it out to a pro welder. So far 3 runs with zero issues. Getting less nervous around it each time lol

I know this might seem like a stupid question, but have you tried filling it with jars to see how many quarts it can hold?

no jars yet. Just grow bags. Grow bags are more economical, no matter what your growing IMO. That being said I could find out tomorrow and report back on that. Good question.

If one of you decide to do this get a muller door or one like it. This door is rated at 50 psi . Cheap doors are not pressure rated so don't skimp on the door. That's for safety.

Like what? Is there anything specific ?

For the door I orderd from a company called muller they make man way doors.  Look for ones with pressure ratings. Sometimes there in bars, others pounds .

No , I am not a professional , I just needed production and efficiency.

I wanted to do 80 12 pound bags of shiitake.. I didn't like any of the other methods of steam or using my AA pressure cooker. Time is money
I needed a bigger boat and something to handle 15 psi  so I acquired parts from my aa pressure cooker for the parts and with some help put this thing together.

This is cool and would definitely suit the needs of this cultivator.  Where did you source the 140 gallon propane tank?  Also, would you mind getting a close up pic of how the double regulators are set up??

Tank was $300 off craigslist, I had to take the valve off the top and fill with water before any work could be started.

hi skuzzy i just found a pressurized water tank rated at 40psi, around double the size of your propane tank for two hundred fifty USD

i can probably pass it on to some steel works shop for welding... the only hurdle for this build would be sourcing the manway.. tsk.

whats your bar rating for you manway?

ps. how do you heat it?

propane? LPG?

heating this with a rocket stove might be a good option.

If using a lot of power to heat you would want to increase the number of pressure valves/regulators, so it can actual vent fast enough. Some valves will have the power listed on them, or some other value which can be calculated back.

i.e. I had a steam boiler open to atmposphere, it was venting through a single tube of about 8 or 9mm internal diameter. It built up pressure at high powers, think 6kW was the highest I used. I think it will get to a certain pressure and stabilise, the steam flow out of the pipe would just increase. I turned if off before finding out as the tank began to puff outwards and other gaskets began to leak.

On something that big I would put a second gauge on it too, just incase the first fails. I would also have a temperature probe just to be extra sure its doing what its supposed to be, or what is indicated.

In my experience, I used the gauge , stem and pressure weight right off an all American pressure cooker which is more than  adequate . For safety I got two adjustable  ball pressure check valves off amazon for $20 dollars each. I set each at 20 psi and they have never even been needed yet because the pressure weight does such a great job.

Everyone is free to do what they want but I of course love my  design. I have not needed any more equipment.

Fuck you probably should vent the thing for at least 30-45m. If you ever have any problems with your grain jars its because you were pressurising air.

Not grain jars . 20 5 quart pressure cooker.

That is a good  suggestion though..

I pressure cooked for three hours instead of 90 mins so if I have issues this time I will do that.

I never vent my AA ..

Lol I said it was a good idea.
I know that lol
It's working properly though I did a probe check in a bag. My unit I guess does not heat fast enough for me to vent it. It does that naturally through the valve stem. It takes an hour and 30  just to get up to temp

But if you're in a hurry, and really got to go
If you're in a hurry, might have to find out slow
That it's one thing to try and another to fly
You get there quicker just a step at a time
It's one thing to bark, another to bite
The show ain't over till you pack up at night
