We are having a problem with some mushrooms turning black in the dehydrator. Does anyone know why? Should we throw them out?

No you shouldn't throw them out. My dehydrator has never done that to any of my mushrooms unless they were mishandled before going into the dehydrator, or if it was turned off in the middle of drying. Did you do either of those?

they're fine keep drying them... looks like you left some verm/other shit on the bases , I prefer to trim all that shit off so my shrooms don't crunch and taste gritty

Yes I turned it off before I left for work. So you think they are OK?

Yes you can dehydrate them on 170 for 3 days straight and they'll be fine, why did you turn it off? They gotta dry for about 12-24 hours usually.

Use a toothbrush for the verm. I also sometimes use my pruning shears that I harvest with to shave off the very outer layer of "skin" that all the verm is stuck to from the base.

I guess I just worry about leaving things on while I'm gone, but I'll be sure to just leave it running next time. Thanks for all the help.

that's a great idea with the toothbrush the liberal chop I been giving them has to add up at the end of the week

Yep stumps are the densest part of the mushroom. Like hell am I throwing THAT away. I'll use fingernails before I do that.
Like you can see here:

I had to use fingernails for those because they were so small. Will turn your nail blue but that's an easy fix. That whole right side of the plate was blobs/mutants and I dunno if I had cleaned those up yet, or at all.

One thing that causes this kind of darkening is if you happen to store them in the fridge (when fresh) and the temps get close to freezing. The parts of the fridge that are closest to the freezer box can freeze or partially freeze, the mushrooms look fine but when you dry them they get dark.

....

They HAVE to be cracker dry or they will lose potency at a much quicker rate. There isn't any "like" about it, they must be cracker dry. The only medium is an unhappy medium. Unhappy because nobody likes eating mushrooms that are rotten and don't work.
