My best friend growing up when the valley of alaska had this crazy fire. His dad stole a bulldozer and basically saved all his neighbors houses. I guess it was that intense.

to be honest idk what trouble I would have gotten in for just leaving, probably deep shit. i called my friend who was off and he went and got her. nco was a total cuntbag and had his eye on me that whole day thinking I was just trying to get out of work or something IDK - awful boss. one time I had dictated orders to go get a urine sample done and told his stupid ass and showed him the orders and he says OK see ya later and he called me 30 times in the next 2 hours "where are you? what are you doing? you're awol" - like god damn are you retarded I told you where I'm at. once I got promoted I got another supervisor thank god.

CHELAN, Wash. (AP) — Firefighters were holding their own Thursday against the largest wildfire on record in Washington state, even as rising temperatures and increased winds stoked the flames.
The National Weather Service had issued a red-flag warning earlier in the day for the fires near Okanogan, saying weather conditions had the potential to spread the flames.
"All the lines are holding," Bernie Pineda, spokesman for the 450-square-mile fire, said Thursday afternoon.
He said winds were actually pushing portions of the giant fire back on itself.
The blazes killed three firefighters last week and have burned at least 40 homes and 40 outbuildings.
Heavy smoke that had grounded aircraft lifted a bit and helicopters were able to drop water on the flames, fire spokesman Rick Isaacson said.
More than 1,150 square miles of Washington have burned, nearly the size of Rhode Island, the state Department of Natural Resources said.
Gov. Jay Inslee visited firefighters on the lines.
"They know they're in danger and this danger is persistent," Inslee said.
Inslee said the fires were more spread out across the state than last year.
"This is not just a local fire, it's a statewide slow-motion disaster," he said.
The governor met with about 20 members of the National Guard fighting a fire near Lake Chelan. They worked to protect about a half-dozen homes.
"Trying to predict what the fire is going to do is one of the hardest things," guardsmen Casey Stockwell said.
Homeowner Jake Kneisley, 41, leaned against a car down a hill from his two-story home. Kneisley said he was up all night watching the fire near his home.
"I feel incredibly lucky these people are here for us," Kneisley said as firefighters worked nearby.
Elsewhere in the West, people in west-central Idaho near Riggins have been told to evacuate due to a wildfire that expanded to 40 square miles. Nearly 600 firefighters were working to protect structures along U.S. Highway 95 and the Salmon River.
In Oregon, a large wildfire near John Day had increased in size, and firefighters were concerned about explosive growth. The fire has burned 134 square miles.

Geranios reported from Spokane, Washington. Associated Press photographer Ted Warren contributed from Omak, Washington.

Pretty insane... You've got to be pretty damn brave to fight a fire in those kinds of winds... Shit's way unpredictable.... and needless to say, ridiculously hot.
Back on the infamous day of October 8th 1871(I think) when almost all of wisconsin, chicago, etc burned down - the fire was soooooooo incredibly hot it literally jumped across the peninsula, across Lake Michigan from one side of Michigan to the other... a distance of 26,000 feet

Holy hell, yeah you're right definitely not just water.. Doesn't look very natural, probably not the best for whatever plant/fungi soaks it up

Yeah, but cloaking the entire PNW in a nice warm blanket of smoke-clouds could affect our climate... So what you're saying is: if it IS related, no one really knows how.
Didn't they find that agrarian communities, who burn fields, were in fact harming the environment as much as helping it replenish? I have no source.

A little research reveals:
The material is called phos-check.It is primarily made up of 85% water, 10%fertilizer (ammonia phosphate and sulfate ions), and 5% minor ingredients(iron oxide for color, clay or bentonite). It works by coating the ground, buildings and plants with a moisture (like water, but has a 'stickyness' to it) usually dropped by aircraft and reducing the flammability. It is non-toxic to humans if it gets on your skin but can be harmful to animals if swallowed. It is red because once dropped it is easily visible from the air and on the ground.

Interesting.. Well at least for the most part it's natural. Hate to hear that it is harmful to animals. This stuff has to get into water sources wild animals use to drink

We had quite the storm here last night. Took down a couple trees and made a mess. Ended up losing power for 9 hours. I forgot how crazy dark it gets when all the lights go out.

I live across border from Washington last week city smelled like a campfire and was like pea soup smog. Still paper said it was only about 1/4 as bad as China's air quality which is crazy i don't know how they live like that.

I was reading an article that was explaining why small fires become so catastrophic. Its all the build up of debris on the ground. Used to just burn off a little bit. But now it's getting so stacked up your leaving chunks as large as ri burnt to the ground.

Fires burn hotter when there's more build up as well... when they burn regularly as they should in 10-15 year cycles it burns fast and quick enough that the trees aren't very damaged... a good lot of the fires this year are hot enough to engulf the trees.
