What would it be? (within reason; breast inspector or LSD quality tester are a bit fantastical - I'm thinking more in the realms of realistic possibility)

LSD inspector and breast quality tester
my more serious answer would be a spiritual counselling/guidance role, perhaps also an author, some form of self-employment that deals with helping others and spreading whatever knowledge and wisdom i happen to acquire

Pool boy at the Playboy mansion.
But seriously, I think mine would be 'writer,' only for me there would be no deadlines. That would be fun.
What about you, Jsb?

Thanks for asking DQ. I'm actually considering a role as a therapist (of some sort). Which is why I think I started this thread.
For as long as I can remember (in my adult years) I've wanted to do a job that helps people. I would really love to be in the Fire & Rescue service, but the pay would be less than 1/3 of what I currently earn. Not an option with the expensive hobbies & house what not.
But then last night a friend of mine who's training to be a therapist suggested that I would be really good at it. My own therapist asked the day before if I have ever considered it. That's on top of several other significant people in my life (all of whom work in caring type roles) who have said similar about me over the years. I'd always dismissed it as fantastical as I'm not a great listener. But using meditative breathing I'm really learning to become one.
I think I'd really love to help vulnerable young people; first time offenders, that kind of thing. I think I could be really good at it; I've been round the block a few times (so to speak) and I long to help people. Coupled with the fact that I find us (humans) so immensely fascinating - I feel like it's something I could be truly passionate about.
Working in the heart of the beast (for the banks) as I do, I'd kinda resigned myself to my work life being a soulless existence that pays extraordinarily well. But now I'm beginning to imagine a work life that pays well enough to keep me comfortable, whilst being something that I could throw my heart and soul into.
Maybe it's just a pipe dream, but there's definitely a spark that's been ignited through the coming together of lots of little pieces. I guess I just gotta see how bright the fire burns now!!

Yeah I'd say there's no reason not to go for it if it's what you really want.

Thank you both so much for the kind words and support.
Interestingly, as you both said you'd be writers - what is it that you'd choose to write about?

I like the idea of being a mushroom farmer. Or even small scale agriculture of some form. I like playing in the earth a lot.
I used to think forestry might be nice. Until I talked to a bunch of folks in the forest service
Maybe working for a private land management company would be better

There is a poster here on the shroomery who I got involved with because he plays a game I do. Anywho, he made a legit business out of mushroom farming. he grows one type of rare mushroom that seems very difficult to find anywhere outside of europe. so he became the sole distributor in the us and now just does that as his full time job. bought himself some land and really made it work.
pretty cool IMO, modern age wonder
last I knew he had some troubles getting his rabbits to breed tho

Ever listen to Boards of Canada? While I'd either like to be them or the Bonobo. BoC are two Scottish brothers who don't tour and haven't ever really given away their identity. They are free to make their art in relative obscurity, while living off the light income it brings in. Maybe they have PT jobs doing something, I don't know. That or Bononbo, making beats so great you're just paid to tour and do that for a living. That with intermittent vacationing time. Doneski.
