Big mistakes were made

so yesterday I finished sterilizing 24 half pint brf cakes.
first mistake I didn't notice: 4 jars were burnt from the pressure cooker bottom.
so then today I go to inoculate th remaining jars and after I finish I realize I skipped the step where I put a layer of vermiculite on top of the cake before I inoculate them.
I freaked out and taped over the holes just now.
was this mistake too much?

There's really no point in holding on to them to be completely honest with you. The burnt jars, okay but that dry verm layer is the first and ONLY layer of defense for pf jars against contams. You're going to be seeing a rainbow soon

You're looking for an answer no one is going to give you. The dry verm layer is the ONLY DEFENSE these jars have against contamination, they are naturally extremely attractive to mold and other contaminates because of their highly nutritious nature.
But okay, someone else will chime in

No, we can't, because it won't.
Shaking a PF jar can contaminate it even if you have the verm layer.
What do you want to waste? Some effort and materials, or all that plus 2 weeks?
To me, time is the most valuable thing in the hobby. You can buy materials, you can make more jars, but you can't get back lost time...

Everything will be ok. Just colonize the jars with whatever happened to land inside. When that's done, make sure to birth all of your cakes into an effective chamber, so that all your moldshrooms can grow. If you then ingest whatever grows, you might just die...so yea, you will have a trip...to heaven. Oh yea, but remember, everything will be ok.

Perhaps it was the wrong place for sarcasm, and it doesn't matter if it was wrong..it was sarcasm. As for what I am doing here, reading the forums...same as you..get off your high horse, and step off.

well here's what I'm gonna do... I'm gonna leave these jars alone to wither away and maybe a miracle will happen.
in the meantime I will acquire more spores and work on project number 2. Would be awesome if someone had some extra cube spores.

Well, since you have the jars all loaded, sterilized, inoculted, etc., I would say it makes sense to let them ride. See what happens. Some of them may bake it through. You really never know. It deepnds. Maybe the mold and bacteria spores weren't too active in the place where you did the inoculation. Who knows. I have seen jars that should have gotten contaminated come through just fine.
Supposing, worst case, that all the jars do go bad, that is really going to be a good, direct, kick-in-the-head lesson for you. You will never, never again forget the verm.

If it's contamed it's contamed ,
If by make it through you mean produced mushrooms then that's a different story. Mold spores are microscopic, if one landed there chances are hundreds or thousands did and one will be active.
But it's all good, let him let it rock , post pics when you see rainbows.

as long as he doesn't open the jars, he should be ok though right? I moved the 3 I had with contamination outside into a bucket. Going to wait til trash day to toss them in my bin.

No because the way gas exchange happens in PF jars is through those tiny holes. Like previously stated even shaking a PF jar can lead to a contam. The dry verm layer is there to catch any unwanted spores. Without it you're gas exchange is loaded with contaminated air.
So basically air is constantly being recycled in a PF jar. CO2 is moving out and O2 is coming in, bringing in a lot of nasty stuff with it.
But we'll see, stranger things have happened, I don't want to be negative about it.

My opinion. If you have the ability to restart these jars with new spores do it. If not let it ride I had a jar that 40% of it turned to contaminate gave up for 2 months forgot about the jar came back to find the mycelium fought back and beat the contam. Grew beautifully. These little guys are crazy.
