supplementing sawdust w/ seaweed..?
    #22145340 - 08/26/15 09:49 AM (8 years, 5 months ago)

Hi all,
I've been through the archives and the interwebs searching for info on seaweed as a supplement for alder sawdust and have come up empty so far. I have found a bit about seaweed as a substrate by itself but it's mostly been very small experiments that were inconclusive. The reason I'm interested is because I live on a remote island in Alaska and I'm looking for local alternatives to wheat or rice bran as a supplement for my oysters and shiitake. We have lots of alder and lots of seaweed here and not much else besides conifers and moss. Stamets gives the nutritional info on a couple of species of seaweed in GGMM, so he apparently thought it was a reasonable enough supplement to include in his book. If anyone has any practical info or ideas on the use of seaweed, in particular the species known as bladderwrack, Fucus vesiculosus and also bull kelp, Nereocystis luetkeana, I'd really like to hear it. I will be starting some experiments for myself in the next month or so and I will update as it happens.

I would say that seaweed would be a great supplement for nitrogen. Keeping an eye out on

Found this while rummaging through some olds posts

"Also, take into account that seaweed is high in sodium and a high concentration of fatty cellulose. Sodium and oils can deter growth.

The process we used to remove the cellulose involved a centrifuge. Further baths were needed to remove the salts.

Again, the inconveniences far outweighed the benefits. A bag of cow poop is still cheap."
