Prevention.
I don't really use antivirus, and I never really have an issue. I kind of think of antivirus as training wheels. They can help guide you and keep you from getting fucked up, but beyond a certain point, you should just be able to prevent it on your own.
Accidents do happen however. It's exceedingly rare that you get a virus that cannot simply be cleaned by downloading a program to get rid of it, so I really only bother to download one when I feel it's needed. Other than when needed they're a huge pain in the ass. Pirated shit just constantly throws up false positives.

With my face against the floor I can’t see who knocked me out of the way. I don’t want to get back up but I have to so it might as well be today. Nothing appeals to me no one feels like me, I’m too busy being calm to disappear. I’m in no shape to be alone contrary to the shit that you might hear. You can't wake up, this is not a dream. You're part of a machine, you are not a human being With your face all made up, living on a screen. Low on self esteem, so you run on gasoline

I work in the IT Industry and always recommend Microsoft Security Essentials. Sleek, simple to use, doesn't make your PC laggy, doesn't take up an ungodly amount of space like others, and most importantly, doesn't cost a cent. Combined with Malware Bytes for taking care of any Spyware/Malware (also free) you'll be good to go.
Virus protection can get very expensive, people get sucked in with promises of top notch protection when in reality the majority of them do nothing that Microsoft software can't do.

Avast! I've used it for 14 years and I've never had virus/malicious program problems. More recently, I combined it with Malware bytes but you need to pay for it's real-time protection feature. As said before, prevention is also key. Don't visit dodgy sties or download weird files BUT if you do fail, anti-malicious software is key. But on occasion, adverts on normal sites CAN contain malicious software. I also recommend getting Firefox and getting two add on: AdBlock Plus and Noscript (essentially blocks JavaScript and other stuff that can infect you with crap)

Used Microsoft Essentials for a Full Scan twice and it freezes at a certain point. Also the PC seems to o freeze at random intervals. Its like its having a stroke.

AVs are pretty much dead. The only thing they really protect you from is yourself. And many are just as bad as viruses themselves and eat up resources on your PC. See: Norton, McAffee
If you use something like noscript and an on-demand scanner when needed, that's 99% of it right there. A lot of AV's are obtrusive and resource hungry, but Avast and Avira and MSE are some of the better ones. I think for the most part they are completely unnecessary these days and don't provide much protection at all, a false sense of security And a total pain in the ass sometimes when they conflict with other things/false positives etc.
If you want to be secure, an AV will not save you. Practicing safe browsing habits will. Keeping all your software up to date and encrypting will.

I find antivirus programs slow down and fuck up my computer more then the actual viruses.

Fuuuck I hate Avast. I was going to spend tonight watching AV tests/reviews to find an alternative.
The AV aspect is fine, never had a virus, but then i've never had one before Avast either.
But internet not working? 95% of the time it's an issue with Avast on my PC. Switch off Avast, reconnect and it works like magic.
PC lagging? Check task manager and yep it's some Avast bullshit.
Reboot to a black screen? Avast again...
Every time I go into "Programs and Features" the computer goes to shit while Avast does whatever.
Then there's the advertising. I paid for a subscription and all they want to do is sell me more shit.
I wish they didn't get good reviews, every time my subscription is due and I look for an alternative I convince myself to sign up for another year...

I use AVG 2015. You should also use Adblock Plus like someone above recommended. I tried Avast and it was pretty useless for me.

Antivirus programs cause more problems then the viruses themselves honestly.

ive used Kaspersky IS for the last 4 or 5 years. its my favorite by far and i get free licences for it every year
i could hook you up with one if your interested in using it
i cant stand programs like komodo, avast, ESPECIALLY McAffe. AVG is tolerable.
Spybot and Malwarebytes are awesome too. i use spybot alongside KIS just to be extra safe and i never get viruses, and only occasional PUP warnings

this is where i'm at. i've tried a few premium versions of various antivirus/malware suites. after months of tweaks, none of them protected me; mostly, they just bogged down my pc to the point of it being unusable. i really don't see how malwarebytes is even in business still. it never detected any of the infections i had. if i think i have a problem i'll use the emisoft scanner and their excellent forum if it's really bad. i also use adwcleaner, rkill and jrt.

what websites are you getting viruses from? if youve been having trouble for months and months and months, havnt you figured out where they're coming from? and if you couldnt ever detect the viruses, how did you know that you didnt just have a slow, outdated PC?
the only 'viruses' that ever get past my KIS/Spybot combo are PUP's that i accidentally installed myself
i also torrent alot of stuff, and i never get viruses from it.

malwarebytes is a good on-demand scanner, but I wouldn't bother with it for active scanning. AVs are just a pain in the ass for me nowadays, they only cause problems when using cracked/pirated software, I hate having to set exceptions for everything.
