The rules of PSP and the Fallacies sticky were not put there by OC, but do serve a real purpose. Not all trippers are immature children devoid of reason and propriety.
If you want to truly understand back holes, relativity and the big bang theory, then you'd better get at least some math and physics under your belt.
If you want to study the afterlife, then it makes sense to become skilled and fluent in the use of out of body consciousness. A tiny, tiny fraction of the scientific community has had more than 5 out of body experiences they can recall with clarity. Yet they are convinced that the knowledge that experts in this skill have obtained is nonsense. The tibetans chose not to study it in a sterile lab or with equations on a chalkboard, instead, they decided to get into the consciousness of the afterlife and go there directly and figure it out. And, they found it takes a lifetime of discipline to train the awareness to be able to accomplish this very difficult feat.
And yet, we know there are ancient cultures that understood the precession of the equinoxes, a 26,000 year (roughy) cycle that we needed advanced telescopic devices to understand. There were ancient cultures that developed the ability of the mind to disconnect from ordinary reality and CONNECT to non-ordinary reality in ways that our scientific community is frankly quite clueless about because their own inability to do this gives them an extreme bias against it.

Immortality is the ability to retain full memory through all consciousness transformations. Loss of memory is man's greatest curse and, in very real terms, death." -- Ancient Taoist Master

What proof is there that out of body experiences are connected to the afterlife? oh yeah, none. never mind shamu.

In that the Near Death Experience nearly always involves an out of body experience, I'd say there's a pretty clear connection there.

Interesting that Taoist Shaman say that waking reality is near beer compared to the far more potent and higher potential of non ordinary reality. Tibetans say the exact same thing. Tibetans learned to get there without drugs at all ... completely controlled ... at will ... could spend hours a day exploring and mapping it out. Could watch a person dying from both waking and out of body perspective ... Compared notes for centuries. They learned a lot.
Our collective ignorance of highly developed cultures is staggering.

Why is it that something needs to happen after we die, exactly?

If nothing happens, isn't that something happening?

When you go to sleep turn the light off. It's as simple as that.

No, that is the definition of an oxymoron. Atheism is not the believe in the inexistent of gods. It is the absence of a belief. Therefore, if nothing happens, nothing happens. Nothing does not become something without intentional processing, and I do not believe anyone is intentionally processing anything.

If everything goes black and you turn into nothing, that is something happening. You went from being in state A to state B. And you've died and know that there is no intentional processing behind that?

Ever heard of the concept thanathomorphose? It is a fictionial term that exemplifies the idea better than other examples of which I can think. While you are "dying" there is a process. After you are dead, there is the absence of a process. Simply put: The absence of water in a river does not mean the presence of its absence (oxymoron).

It is kind of an important far reaching question, wouldn't you say? Some might say the most important question of all?
Some might say ... "hey what difference does it make we'll just find out when it happens" ... but others might say that how we live today in the here and now has a huge impact on what happens after death ... And if that IS the case, then it certainly does matter a lot.

What I actually meant is that, as humans, and very limited beings, we ask questions that may satisfy our lack of control and fears. Then we decided that death cannot be the end. Why not? Why is it "bad" that there is an end? Why is it that something NEEDS to happen? This is a way of thinking that places the roach that is humanity at the center of the universe. I don't think these animals (especially me) deserve that privilege.
