Most moving songs/ albums
    #22143509 - 08/25/15 10:18 PM (8 years, 5 months ago)

What are some of the most moving songs or albums you have come across?

I would have to say a lot of Pink Floyd is without a doubt the most moving and passionate music I have experienced thus far in my life.

This song really stands out for me:

Pink Floyd - Pulse - Take It Back

The lyrics and guitar and whole song overall is just so powerfull.

Quote:

Her love rains down on me easy as the breeze
I listen to her breathing it sounds like the waves on the sea
I was thinking all about her, burning with rage and desire
We were spinning into darkness; the earth was on fire

She could take it back, she might take it back someday

So I spy on her, I lie to her, I make promises I cannot keep
Then I hear her laughter rising, rising from the deep
And I make her prove her love for me, I take all that I can take
And I push her to the limit to see if she will break

She might take it back, she could take it back some day

Now I have seen the warnings, screaming from all sides
It's easy to ignore them and G-d knows I've tried
All this temptation, it turned my faith to lies
Until I couldn't see the danger or hear the rising tide

She can take it back, she will take it back some day
She can take it back, she will take it back some day
She can take it back, she will take it back some day

--------------------
Don't worry about me, I've got all that I need. And I'm singing my song to the sky

You know how it feels, With the breeze of the sun in your eyes. Not minding that time's passing by

I've got all and more, My smile, just as before. Is all that I carry with me

I talk to myself, I need nobody else. I'm lost and I'm mine, yes I'm free

music is a massive part of my life and this is the most beautiful/moving song i have ever heard - takes some careful dissecting of the lyrics to really make it hit home, but this song is an absolute masterpiece of songwriting. the whole thing is about his mother dying, and the loss of the comfort of home as one grows and learns to lose.

I thought you were going to post Tool's Wings For Marie at first but that is great too

DSOTM is great but it is definitely overrated. It is more perfected and "mainstream" or at least appeals to a wider range of people than say Saucerful of Secrets

I love that album too though, I own the regular and live vinyl :tongue2:

Some of their other stuff is so much deeper and crazier though. Here is another song I find incredibly powerful by them:

Pink Floyd - Keep Talking

Once again the lyrics are powerful and deep and the music itself is some of the most intense floyd has put out IMO, as far as crazy psychedelic jams go.

I dunno man I used to be all about saucerful but lately I'm just into dsotm. I dunno why but it just hits home better than saucer. My favorite version of the actual song saucerful of secrets is actually off of either ummagumma or live at pompeii

The only time I ever really got into Saucer was on a bunch of nitrous, it came on randomly and just felt so right.

DSOTM is a much more soothing album though, much more grounded and less alien as it all pertains to life and humans pretty directly.

Pretty much all my favorite versions of their stuff is live, at least for a lot of it. I respect all the album stuff too though and switch it up a lot.

Mainly since so many of their bootlegs are terrible quality.

Animals has always been my shit though, that is a damn powerful album too with some intense messages.

I just had the pleasure of seeing a dope pink Floyd cover band at a festival. It was really well done and made me happy. And the lazers... Oh man.

saucerful of secrets sucks ass compared to DSOTM  - you should have said piper (saucerful has a few good songs but is nowhere near being a great album). I've heard everything floyd's done and dsotm is just special to me for some reason (and millions of others as well). perfect album.

i always liked these 2 by the fish in terms of being moving

pink floyds most moving song to me is :

though most moving 'guitar' solo is definitely the solo from TIME - just amazing.

You missed the point about A Saucerful entirely... It was that it is a way further out album and appeals to less people.

DSOTM is a lot easier to get into and appeals to a much wider audience. I never said one was better than the other.

Saying that about pink floyd albums is like saying an apple is better than an orange

you say it was farther out I say they were still trying to find their sound with Syd leaving  seriously though besides corporall clegg and set the controls that album is mediocre even for 'weird' floyd. if anything DSOTM is still very 'far out' compared to the wall -which I think sucks ass.

Tool's "Lateralus" album got me through a very tough year, which happened to coincide with my first Saturn return.

Katatonia- "Night is the New Day" (Album)

Katatonia- The One You Are Looking for is not Here.

Belakor - "Stone's Reach" (Album)

Omnium Gatherum - "The Return"

And the Skyrim theme. Don't ask...just...it does things to me okay?

 Music is entirely subjective.

Those albums were going for two entirely different things, and I completely understand why you would prefer DSOTM...

I have listened to it much more than a saucerful myself, mainly becouse I am not usually out of it enough for it to appeal to me much.

The wall has some great songs, just like the dark side. I like all of their music and it all has its place

You are the only one saying one is better then the other and hence the only one arguing anything really...

As a die hard Pink Floyd fan I think I should jump in and give my analysis of each album.  It is my opinion yes but here it goes.

Piper at the Gates of Dawn is by far the most ahead of its time piece of art to ever be made by a human being.  Space rock was not a thing before 1967, yes you had psychedelia but to that status no, at least not to my knowledge.  In my opinion that album is for when you take WAY TO FUCKING MUCH of everything at once.  It is the inner most parts of human psyche and few understand it imo.

Saucerful of Secrets is Floyd in its entirety this is when it was a 5 piece space rock band.  I love this album it is my favorite album to do nitrous too.  Live this album is jam as it gets.  I am going to put it on now actually.  Sums that up.

Obscured by clouds is probably the most underrated album they have.  The lyrics start to get more real world "the gold its in the..." listen to those lyrics moving to say the least.

Meddle is another fantastic album

Dark Side of the Moon oh lord what does this album not hit it has deep lyrics and just an album that if offered to put on and someone says no sucker punch that person cause it is perfection in the upmost degree.  All about Syd the lead singer from the first album and half of Saucerful.  It is a culmination of years of practice and heartbrake and mental illness.

Animals basically a more jam based obscured by clouds and animals is in my top 3 floyd albums

The Wall imo is a basic album

Division bell is a good change of pace very gilmour based

Atom heart mother is floyds opera piece i love that album

A momentary lapse of reason is another highly underated album

Awesome post  I love hearing people's opinions on this stuff (not many people to talk about it with on a day to day basis).

Piper is pure genius and Floyd's 2nd best IMO - I wish Syd managed to stay with them longer. That whole album is mesmerizing. Astronomy Domine is literally supposed to symbolize an LSD trip, and works fantastically. I love this album dearly and own it on stereo and mono on vinyl.

Saucerful is a band in transformation, Syd did nothing but work on Jugband Blues - he didn't touch anything else on that album. I think it's pretty fun, though I wouldn't rate it too highly. The instrumental side of the LP is a little scary to listen to but just them 'practicing' for what would be Echoes later on.

Meddle is great, though practice for DSOTM. The members of the band themselves would say everything after Piper was 'practice' for what would become DSOTM - which is the best album ever produced, IMO, no questions asked. It is magical in that it appeals to the common consumer and the die-hard psychonaut, just a beautiful perfect album that everyone worked on, no Roger Waters domination, etc. Everyone shines on this.

Animals is their 3rd best. Roger was taking over at the time and it's a great listen, and Gilmour shines with Dogs.

After Animals IMO everything goes completely down hill. They have good random songs here and there but the cohesiveness of the band was gone, which cannot be argued. Roger took over right before Animals and the band suffered greatly.

I  Pink Floyd!

How the hell can you put Momentary Lapse over Atom Heart???? :nonono:

I love me some Learning To Fly, but atoms heart is pretty solid. If they had finished fat old sun in time it would have been even more amazing.

Also rating floyd albums just feels wrong to me, they all do something pretty well and for the most part are pretty unique.

Some songs of the division bell for instance are amazing, even if the whole album isn't as golden as Meddle or Animals.

I completely agree about Obscured By Clouds though, such an amazing album. The fact it is just a soundtrack and was recorded in 2~ weeks makes all the more special.

Floyd has tiers in which most albums are 'ties' IMO.

there was a rumor that Pink Floyd & Waters were supposed to do 2001 a space odyssey's soundtrack but turned it down, which he regrets to this day.

Undertow by Tool is my workout album
When "Bottom" comes on you know I am about to bust out the best set ever

If I let you, you would make me destroy myself
In order to survive you, I must first survive myself
I can sink no further, and I cannot forgive you
There's no choice but to confront you, to engage you, to erase you
I've gone to great lenghts to expand my threshold of pain
I will use my mistakes against you, there's no other choice
I'm shameless now, I'm nameless now, I'm nothing now, I'm no one now
But my soul must be iron 'cause my fear is naked
I'm naked and fearless
And my fear is naked

I'm 61 yrs old & have never heard anyone come close to the things Jimi could do with his guitar. Sure, there's been some excellent guitarists since he made (& left) the scene...but nobody has had the impact he did.
No computer-enhanced sound, no help from electronics, no special equipment...nothing but him & his guitar. Plus he was here for such a short period of time, yet left an everlasting impact on the music world.
Major props to the best guitarist that ever lived...& that ever will live.

As many critics have said Hendrix is the only guitar player who ever looked like he was completely at home and playing effortlessly while playing
- true alien like Bill Hicks would say. My (2nd) favorite guitarist behind Jerry Garcia - though I'd say Hendrix was by definition THE BEST.

I wouldn't really call it "special equipment" but he definitely had "help" from electronics so to speak. He pioneered the wah pedal and distortion pretty hardcore.

Electric guitar is all about that diversity though and ability to alter your sound with various effects. He was definitely utilizing electronics though.

him & roger mayer basically pioneered the fuzz/univibe/octavia like you mentioned, he used electronics but in a very primal fashion. his trick was basically turn everything up to 11. he played with such a big stack and such loud volume that he's nearly impossible to emulate in a home setting

Yeah I forgot about the fuzz too, man I love fuzz :hairmetal:

I know what you mean, he is a very raw and amazing guitarist.

I just love effects and wanted to point out he definitely pioneered a lot of electrical effects n stuff which helped forge his unique sound.

I really feel bad for you youngsters. You missed the most amazing era of music. Go ask your grandparents, as your folks are probably too young to remember the 1960s & 1970s.
We'd go into the city & see bands like The Who, Jethro Tull, Mountain (Mississippi Queen)...& the most expensive seats were $6.50, then $5.50, $4.50 & the shittiest seats were $3.50. Weed was $15/lid...LSD was $1.50/hit & TV was free.

I would have worded it better but I am pretty :stoned: and did not think it through much

I recently got really into Marty Friedmans solo stuff, his second and third albums especially are very beautiful:

Marty Friedman - Scenes (full album)

This one may be my favorite, he is so great at blending very melodic mellow rhythms and then sneaking in ridiculous solo's but making it all sound pretty smooth.

At least a lot of the time, he has some more intense stuff too especially his first solo album which has a lot of straight up metal songs.
