If you could recognise people with magical abilities, but if you yourself were not and would never have these abilities, would you if you could show them how to use them, knowing full well that they could be used against you?
me i don't believe in magic but if it were possible show them how to use them

Would they be using them for good or evil or both? Do they still have free will (assuming there's such a thing) to use the abilities in any manner they choose?

If "magic" were something that did exist, I think anything associated with such power... if i were myself to obtain such a thing as "magic" would require more wisdom than i currently possess, if and then i thought i was wise enough to teach or wise enough to know if i should teach such things or not...it would depend... on the circumstances..

you could not know their heart strictly speaking, you would have to trust your own as to how they would act. Free will is in play.

I would teach them how to use the powers. I guess determinism would probably be in play, right? Fate? That's probably how I would see it. Teach them and take the risk. Maybe they will use the magical powers for the good. But even if they use them for bad, it would probably be as predestined.

Wouldn't it be that person's fate to learn to use the magic and then to use it for whatever purpose it was intended to be used by him?
"Determinism is the philosophical belief that every event or action is the inevitable result of preceding events and actions. Thus, in principle at least, every event or action can be completely predicted in advance, or in retrospect. " http://order.ph.utexas.edu/chaos/determinism.html

I'm not sure what you mean by "in advance". Use the magic in advance of how it was intended to be used? Of course.

Absolutely not! I don't even share certains "truths" with people unless I know they are truely willing to learn something new and won't use their knowledge to hurt others. This is another reason I point to the links I posted and don't just give what I know "gratis".
Why do you ask?

I was questioning determinism as a philosophy if predicting behavior or events is part of determisism.

I see. Well, sort of an explanation in advance. Don't most people act predictably?
If the person to whom I teach magic skills goes out and uses those skills to rob banks, it would be predictable if we knew the type of childhood that person had. I don't think just the simple fact of becoming aware of magical skills predicts how those skills would be used.

Kinda. Determinism plays off of PSR, the "principle of sufficient reason".
Basically it is the thought that every effect has a cause.
If you hit a ball with a bat it will move. In that sense it could be understood to have 'predictive powers'.

See, I think you posted the better answer, but I can't go back and change my answer. By my nature, I trust people, and I would trust the person to make the right decisions in using his new powers.
But I could see why you would want to wait and make sure that the person was deserving of the powers first.
So here's the deal...I won't go teaching anyone magical powers unless I run it by you first. Okay???
