Anyone ever use ancestry.com or similar?
    #22141005 - 08/25/15 02:08 PM (8 years, 5 months ago)

Was it hella interesting and was it worth the money?
Is there any free ancestry tracking sites?
Do you need any special info like birth certificates and shit?
I'd be interested to see exactly where my heritage comes from.

Someone I know sent in some saliva to have her DNA tested. It cost some kind of money of course, but it tells you where your genes come from.

I thought that was pretty cool. I'd be interested to see what mine came out to be. I have a small amount of native american, but there are rumors my family might have a tad of the negro, wonder how true it is.

Crystal G used one of those sites where you send in spit for analysis.  She paid like 150$ to be told that she's eastern Asian.

I've always wanted to. Our family has an interesting background. I have a general idea with my mom's side. They came here around the second world war from the Ukraine. My great (great?) grandfather had some old diaries/documents around when he died and the general consensus is that we was SS and defected to Canada.

My dad's side is a little different. My great great grandfather was adopted by an English family, but he was however very Scottish/Norwegian. He married a blackfoot lady and that's about as much as anyone knows. My great great grandfather didn't know much so obviously his kids knew even less, and they're all dead. Not much point in tracking your ancestry further than that but it would be cool to know none the less. I'm probably Merovingian obviously.

Jesus Christ can suck my cock.

No, my family knew much of our own history already, and we just went from that to research on the internet, family lines, names, dates, times....

You can do the research that Ancestry.com does for you, although expect to spend a shit ton of time doing so. :cookiemonster:

I've tried ancestry.com's family tree creator and it wasn't very useful to me personally. I'd like to try the DNA analysis though as I imagine it would be interesting to know all of the facets of what make me "me."

There is some resources here:

http://www.archives.gov/research/genealogy/

I'm not sure if Canadee is included tho.  I think the first step is usually to compile everything you do know, and then from there you will have a clearer idea of some possible leads.  Like if you can go back 2 or three generations and you know how and where they were employed you could check census records and such, which might give you new information to go on.

I tried it but didn't get anywhere.  My family's from the Balkans, so lots of records were lost during WWII.  Our family name changed around that time too by one letter.  I Googled my last name and found it means follower of Demeter.  It made a lot of sense because everyone in my family was a farmer until my parents came to America.

I understand how incredibly fortunate I am to be able to draw a straight line back through millennia.

I think my wife tried, she didn't get very far. Apparently there's not a lot of information on my family. All I really know about my family is that some of my ancestors were Welsh and came to America to run from the law. Apparently they did some really fucked up shit and had to flee or die. Our last name used to be one letter off of what it is today, they changed it when they came here.

There's also some shit that another part of my family says that somehow I'm related to Bonnie/Clyde. I dunno if I believe it for sure, and I can't remember how, but I remember how it was explained wasn't really that crazy.

Apparently my entire family tree is just a bunch of criminal fucks.

Yeah it is...

My parents ethnic pride rubbed off on me a little. When I was a bit younger I was really patriotic about my Slavic heritage and I would act like typical EE people act like really racist towards our historic enemies and be prideful about our ethnicity. It's pretty stupid to be honest, I love our culture but when we start getting crazy and overly prideful it makes us look like huge douches with a primitive mindset. It's basically consolidating the stereotype that we are all backwards and poor.

My people are Slavic too.  It's a different world where they're from and where we're from.  My Dad and I used to always butt heads on stuff like black people and homosexuals.  Now that he's old, I guess he's kinda tuckered out.  He doesn't hate black people, but he still hates Jews and Muslims.  I kind of accepted that he was taught that Jews killed his lord and savior and Muslims killed his family.  Not saying that it's right, but he's too old to change his mind easily.

I was joking but now that I think of it...

I was on a train heading from Budapest to Belgrade during the time when Serbia was at war with Croatia. There was this obese Serbian dude with two young Ukranian girls he was bringing back to Serbia to dance in his nightclub. The guy was a total pig in every sense. He ranted for two hours about how the Croatians eat Serbian children and make necklaces out of their fingers. Really crazy shit. He also keep calling my boyfriend a "chinaman" finally he fell asleep only to begin snoring so loudly that it shook the entire compartment, Me, the chinaman, and the two strippers started laughing uncontrollably.

Lmao yeah my dad and grandpa are the same way. It's like they are stuck in the past. My dad hates Tatars and all those Asians and Muslims living in Russia. He blames them for all the problems that Russians/Belarusians had in the past and can't let go of the fact that they murdered and enslaved his ancestors. I can only imagine that South Slavic dads and grandpas are more mad about what the Muslims did to them since it was a lot more recent and they still don't seem to have eased the tension in the Balkans.

I have to say that of all the people I encountered in Europe, the Serbians were by far the nastiest and most racist. Even the kids. We stayed in a youth hostel on New Year's Eve and a bunch of Serbian kids took over the place being complete idiots, fighting and throwing up every where. There were also cockroaches and mice. The two days in Belgrade were the worst part of the trip.

It's kind of a shame that you didn't have a good time.  There's lots of great places to visit if you head south.  The major cities are pretty disheveled, but the countryside is amazing.

We went to Skopje as well. They were nice, but a little worried they were next in line for the wrath of the Serbian nationalists. Very interesting place. Looks more like the Middle East than Europe with all the mosques. We decided to get an overview of the city so we walked up a big hill that over looks the city and inadvertently stumbled upon the gay cruising area.
