I use a glass bottle with a long neck and a plastic cap with a small vent hole in it which is covered by a piece of commercial filter disc that is immobile. No worries there w negative pressure.
If you are going to use lab glass, consider trying it with a one hole stopper with a filter disc covering.

bootster said: I have just made an important discovery in this process.

The sterilizer gauge pin is 3.5 PSI below the O PSI reference. I have just done a run last night and it is holding a vacuum, as you can see by the gauge. Let's look at my other scenario. The PC gauge has the low limit pin set at 0 PSI. A PC with a rocker is never supposed to form a vacuum, therefore set at the factory at the "0" mark. When you convert to a toggle, unless you open it right when it reaches "0", it will form a vacuum. As you can see, the Pressure Canner gauge reads 3.5 psi with NO pressure, at rest. That's because I have used it on a sterilizer, and the vacuum created in the vessel has stressed geared gauge (IMO). In all fairness, I have run a number of runs with this gauge on and it may take a while for the needle to reflect this abnormality.
I am curious to see feedback on this thread to see if anyone notices a change on the needle at rest. Just a heads up.
When was the PC with the gauge pin at 0psi manufactured? It looks like an older PC by the handle visible in the pic. My 1986 AA941 has the gauge pin below 0psi same as my 2012 921 and 2014 930. The gauge on my 941 is actually the only All American cooker gauge that i have seen that actually says "Made in U.S.A." on the face at the bottom. Zoom in on my sig and you will see it. I haven't had any issues with the gauges after pulling vacuum. I've been kinda tempted to Install a gauge with vacuum. So much, that I ordered one yesterday. It seems finding a 2" dial 30"HG to 30psi gauge with a bottom mount 1/8" npt connection is pretty much impossible. You can find them with 1/4" npt connections but I did not want to use a reducer. So I ordered a 1.5" dial display gauge. I'll post more about that when I get it and do some experimenting.
Your gauge readings are a little off. The pc gauge is at almost 2psi. not 3.5psi.

To quote my follow up to the original post: "Notice your pin is below the "0" mark. Mine is AT the "0" mark and I saw another that looked like it didn't have a pin at all. I guess mine is stuck at "2". Very interesting."
The gauge was purchased in 2012. It isn't the original. The 941 PC gauge that is original is stuck at 1 LB (not shown) and is from 2007. I just checked. Here is the other sterilizer gauge (I have 2) at rest.

I read it wrong the first time and corrected it. It looks like I'll put the sterilizer gauge back on the other sterilizer and switch one to the 941 if need be to use that beast.

I wanna see how deep the vacuum is and how fast it gets to its maximum pull. And I wanna see how fast it leaks back to 0. My 941 held vacuum for like 6 days. But when it was released it was not as strong of a vacuum than if I popped it shortly after cooldown. Having the full vacuum range on the dial also gives you an idea of how much longer you need to hold the vent cracked before vacuum is gone.

Got both the 941s on these now. They don't rock lol.. How does the metal pull bar on top work? Set it to the up position when starting the heat? Ignorantly I left it in the down position many cycles and stuff came out fine, then read here about pulling it up, but when? will it snap into the other position by itself? Thanks again for incredible hint.

Yea I was pretty confused too. I put it up u ntill it starts steaming for a few min then flip it down, to vent out any air pockets or whatnot I assume.
After it cools the inside stays sterile until you pull the lever and release the vacuum. If you have unfiltered sterile work inside release it in front of a flow hood if it has GE filters then pop it up whenever.
Ive been enjoying this thing like way too much its a pleasure to use

Lever up until steam is blasting out the vent for 5 mins then pop the lever down. Yep, this vents out the air in the cooker. Not venting can cause improper sterilization because of the air pockets.

I had to put up with the rocker sound for over 20 years and it was the worst part of growing. Originally, in 1977 when I first started growing, I just went to a head shop and bought a "Mushroom kit" that was a suspension solution in a small cup atop a container that you twisted and then shook up the whole, large, clear plastic bin that held bird seed and other stuff, and waited. Those were the days.
