Hippie vs Hippy

On a forum where there are so many self-proclaimed hippies, I'd expect the majority of people here to spell the term correctly. Yet I see both spellings used on a daily basis.
-A hippie is a person that associates with flower power, peace & love, etc.
-Hippy is a term used to describe someone with wide hips.

It seems to me that almost everyone that was raised with access to the internet since they were kids put spelling and grammar on the backburner.
Languages, not just English are being completely torn apart.
It gives me the feeling that one day soon we'll all be living in a society resembling that of Idiocracy.

People call me a hippie all the time.
I live the part, not look it. Except for the hair.
I'm not fond of the term, because it carries such a stigma/pre-determined view.
It depends on how it's used I guess, like anything else.

I second that. I used to teach English to non-native speakers (and will again soon) but I also get some side-dosh here and there doing writing tutoring. Kid's even just a few years younger than I am are TERRIBLE!
I've gotten essays written in ratchet-assed text-message lingo. 5 pages of it, sometimes even written on someones phone. WHAT THE FUCK! I understand that my love for writing is perhaps uncommon compared to most people growing up relatively close to my age but damn!
Kids will sometimes just pop in to the place I am hired to tutor, drop off their paper, and say "edit this for me!" before trying to walk out. My job is to help them with the writing process, grammar, and helping them learn how to use a goddamn spell-check.... However, I do tell them about my under-the-table service where I charge to fix/write their essays. College kids are my most lucrative market sad to say; although I write essays for high school kids too (no morals here). Kids got A LOT of money these days.

I honestly have only heard that word here on the Shroomery. And only in threads talking about festivals like Bisco. I know what it means from context, but have no idea what the correct spelling is for it. I would say plural would be "custies" just based on how the English language works.

I sometimes wish I still had cable TV just to get some good giggles out of the major American "news" networks. I know it's not satire but it sure as hell sounds and looks like it.

Your entire post was interesting coming from the perspective of an English teacher/tutor. My girlfriend went to FSU and majored in creative writing. She doesn't make any money off of the two novels she's written (yet), but she banks when it comes to writing essays for college kids so I know how it goes.
In fact, she just ghost wrote four 350 word essays for a very active member here 2 weeks ago. I don't want to out that member.
