Starting out with cacti seed
    #22140710 - 08/25/15 12:32 PM (8 years, 5 months ago)

I have been wanting for a while to give growing some cacti from seed.

A few questions:

Should I start with Trichocereus Pachanoi or Trichocereus Peruvianus or a Pachanoi/Peruvianus hybrid?

Any other recommendation on a good seed or some pointers on seed selection?

The decision is up to you. But what is it exactly that you are after? Beauty? Potency? Just for shits and giggles?

I personally have found bridgesii seedlings very fun to watch grow, they all are really but bridgesii seems to do very well.

Seeds are pretty cheap though so there is no reason not to get all the cacti seeds :crazy2:

Also hybrids are the shit, I love bridgesii hybrids, such beautiful spines.

You should start everything you could get your hands on man, they take time. The pachanoi should be faster though, an more tolerant to error, or at least that's how it is in my experience. Can't really kill those fuckers from what I've done to it at least. Once I accidentally gave my seedlings highly nuted water that was meant for other plants, ended up killing a lot of em except the pachanoi and pachanoi hybrids, lol. idk, prolly luck.

How do you grow your seeds?

I have started several batches in varying conditions and had a wide range of results.

The best were following this guide though: growing cactus from seed

I bought some seeds off that guys site too and tried his method with them and they are doing amazing.

That site belongs to a chick from another forum if I'm not mistaken.

Looking for potency some years down the line. My garden is full of non-actives so I got some nice visual cacti.

In dollars perhaps, our exchange rate is at a all time high. I can pay around $50 including international shipping which leaves me around $15 for seeds.

Brings me on to the success rate. What can I expect from 10 seeds to successfuly germinate? That would affect how much I could buy.

Depending on where you buy from getting 10 seeds could cost as much or more than getting 50-100.

The last place I ordered seeds from charges 2-5$ per packet and each packet has like 30-100+ seeds. Plus I ordered cuttings so he sent a ton extra.

And the germinated the best out of any seeds I have tried. Some places overcharge on seeds pretty hard but you can find good deals too.

Thanks for all the info and advice!

I got sorted out at a good price (under $35 including shipping). I ended up getting a variety of Pachanoi and Peruvianus as well a selection of Lophs.

Now the wait for the package to arrive begins.

:ohsodevious:
