To Case or Not to Case...
    #22139874 - 08/25/15 09:16 AM (8 years, 5 months ago)

Good Day, folks.

I trust everyone is having fun?

So onto the topic at hand. This site is without a doubt the most helpful and complete resource regarding amateur mycology. Even more impressive is the amount of learned support for a subject which requires patience, finesse and care in it's undertaking.

That being said, there is a lot of conflicting and outdated information. A great deal of it can be easily filtered out using the oh-so-handy 'limit search to topics within x year(s)' function and even within threads, incorrect or outdated information is often pointed out.

Now as my question states, in what situation is a casing layer required? In what situation will it be beneficial? When is a casing layer absolutely not necessary? I refer specifically to bulk substrates and not cakes.

As a point of discussion, I have read that pans require a casing layer while cubes do not. However, to amend that previous sentence, it is my understanding that cubes may benefit from a casing layer depending on the environmental conditions at hand; that is, the specifics of the fruiting chamber especially.

To add, it is my understanding that the casing layer exists (perhaps only in the case of cubes) to prevent the substrate from drying out and to keep humidity up. Am I mistaken?

These questions come about from an issue I had with my first bulk substrate. Multispore inoculation of maize. B+
I'll be rather short: I spawned maize to 50/50+. Waited until 100%. Eagerly watched for another 4 days then introduced FAE. From the moment I did this it was clear my tub was not dialed in and I faced bruised mycelium, dying, yellowing mycelium and when I eventually did get the thing to come right I simply had a massive chunk of mycelium that did absolutely nothing.
Mist, fan, mist fan, more FAE, less FAE, more of everything, less of everything. Stubborn thing just sat. It sat doing squat for 19 days after 150% colonisation. So I said stuff it and cased it with a layer of vermiculite.
The next day, the very next day, a mere 10 hours later, give or take a beer, and the whole sub was full of pins. All of a sudden, from a lost cause to pins...

And this is why I would like a definitive answer on casing. In my situation I believe that it was the environment of the tub which, it would seem, was not adequate and the substrate benefited from the casing layer. Had my tub been dialed in I would not have required the casing layer... right?

Anyhow... I've taken some nice clumps to clone and I'm having a blast playing with agar plates! Shit, it might be more fun that the mushrooms!

Cheers!

The real question is: Do you want to case? I case everything but as Trip just said it's completely unnecessary for cubensis.

PE, APE and KSSS love a casing layer though. Only a few freak strains love casings and a bunch of exotics but for cubes genetics and environment are all you really need for a full canopy.

becoming quite the advisor aren't we gyo? lol. I never case or use liners and I do ok. Like gyo said, you just have to ask yourself whether or not you want to add a few extra steps... But as stated above, some varieties do better with one. Lighting, hydration and a good pin set is way more important than a casing layer imo
