.I was just curious if I could just take the Rye berries and soak them for 16 to 24 hours like with wild bird seed simmer than and then put them in the jar and then pressure cook? most of the tex I have read called for gypsum to be added but I've never done that with wild bird seed, would it work the same way with rye berries is the gypsum a hundred percent necessary? Thx. Ganjaburger

Gypsum isn't necessary with any grain, you can prep it pretty much just like WBS.

Gypsum isn't essential, but I find it helps with fruit-body formation... You get thicker fruits...but I'm still new to this game...so take it for what's worth... I use pelletized Gypsum, so I add it to my simmer water (Frank's WBS Prep) or to the boiling water before I Steep the WBS (Fooman's prep method)...I'm still deciding which I prefer. I also add it to my boiling water before I Bucket tek my Coir. I don't bother putting it in my casing mixes. I've seen it recommended at anywhere from 5% to 10%...I'm usually somewhere in between. Alot of Mycology is Art as well as Science... You have to find what works and makes sense for you.

Good info here in the comments. Gypsum isn't necessary to add, but I find that it certainly helps. I usually soak 4.5 quarts of WBS to make 10 quart jars, and I usually add about 3 table spoonfuls of gypsum. Too much and you will end up with a good amount of sediment on the bottom of your soak bucket. Another beneficial thing to add to your soak would be about a quart of fresh brewed, liquid coffee. I've been doing this recently, and I've been pretty happy with the results so far.

I'm afraid of coffee... But I don't drink it either...does it really make a difference?

If you dont have a dozen successful grows under your belt, I'd personally keep it as simple as possible. I've used coffee and gypsum and have never noticed a difference. That's all I'll say on the topic.

Watch RR's rye preparation video.
You soak the rye berries for 24 hours to germinate bacterial endospores, which are resistant to PC'ing and can ruin your spawn.
Gypsum helps with fruit body formation, keeps the grains for clumping together, and is like $8 for a 25 lb bag. You can buy cheap instant coffee (use a few tablespoons) instead of brewed coffee. Both are proven to help with growth, are incredibly cheap, and there's no reason not to add gypsum/coffee to your grains.

I wouldn't soak rye for 24 hours, you're libel to germinate a lot more than endospores. At any rate I am no longer a believer that soaking to germinate the endospores is really necessary anyway. I have done rye, wheat, oats, millet, barley and corn with no soak preps and not had problems with endospores. I have also had major issues with endospores in spite of doing a soak of anywhere between 12-24 hours.
Sometimes a batch of grain has very high endospore counts. In those cases soaking is not what allowed me to beat them. Most grains tho do not have so many that a standard 12 hour soak or no soak prep with a proper PC cycle cannot take care of them.
