Guitar players - do you sing?

Does anyone here sing while playing guitar? How did you learn/practice this? I can't sing for shit and have a pretty monotone voice. How do you make songs interesting to play (by yourself) without singing? Have someone else sing? Force myself to sing? Learn to play the vocal parts on the guitar?
I keep learning all these chords to songs and getting it down but then it's just me strumming chords for 4 minutes and it's not even a song - trying to make it more interesting.

Learn all the chords of an easy song, play it until its almost second nature. Then try talking while playing it or put on one headphone with the song on and sing along while playing it.

Just dew it you don't need to have a great voice to have a great time singing by yourself. Like everything with the guitar, it gets easier with practice.
There's really no such thing as a bad voice in my opinion. Alot of the greatest singers ever had unconventional voices that probably got them laughed at when they were starting out but over time if you put in the work you get results.
I also love fingerstyle guitarists. Classical and jazz styles work well without any lyrics, so if that is something you're into you could pursue that.
I don't really like "shredder" style music but alot of people do and that also seems to not require singing.

yep I play and sing, the trick is to listen to the chord change like assign chords to the word. If you look at any chord tab you'll see how the chords are listed above the lyrics to see which word you strum on.
I learned how to play and sing with wild thing forever ago. Pick any three chord or two chord song and have at it.

It's fucking hard. Start with songs with slower easier chord changes.

i sing and player guitar. it's really fun. i started by just singing along to whatever music i was listening to, then i started to try to sing and with practice i can now sing. i know what you mean by strumming chords for a while gets boring. i like to fingerpick and add some random licks or runs that fits the progression to give it some more color. adding a 7 or 13 to a chord can make it cool.

I sing and play guitar. For me I used to only be able to sing while I play reggae but after a while, singing while playing became second nature. Now I can basically sing to anything Im playing.

I have been trying to sing and play guitar for a decade. Guitar playing comes fairly naturally to me, but singing literally takes constant effort and focus. Singing is hands down harder than any instrument I've learned to play. It just doesn't come naturally to me, but alas, I still push through and have been really improving the last year or two.
Aside from the suggestions that others have already mentioned, here are a couple additional tips.
1. Sing the same verse over and over and over again. Do the same verse 20 times, then move to the chorus, then the next verse. Do each 20 times or more. The key is repetition and segmenting the song down to modular parts. You will learn faster repeating the same 4 lines over and over compared to singing the entire song through.
2. Slow down the tempo significantly while you learn the song. As you start to get the feel it becomes natural, increase the tempo until you get it up to the desired speed.
3. Focus on your timing by counting the beats to the melody. "1-and-2-and-3-and-4...", etc. but sing the melody with the numbers, not the lyrics. If the vocals on off beat still do the counting, but singing the melody may be challenging. Start with an easier song so you don't have this problem. Counting the song out loud will ingrain the feel and tempo into your subconscious so you can just focus on your singing.
The real idea is that you know the chords, melody, bass runs, and fills so well that you just play automatically and you can focus on singing. Or... if you are naturally a good singing, learn the lyrics to the point you can sing them subconsciously so you can focus on the playing.

thanks that's what I've heard you basically need one or the other to be muscle memory so you can focus on the one you're 'bad' at.

Lol, practicing anything Tommy does an beginner or intermediate player might just lead to frustration. That dude is flat out incredible on the guitar. I saw him live once. He literally played 2 1/2 hours straight and didn't get visually fatigued at all. Tommy is a legend.

I'd say doing the counts has been the biggest thing I have changed that has shown the most immediate improvements in my playing. Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead pretty much said this is what he relied on too when he was younger. The Dead are notorious for off beat vocals and obscure time signatures.
Definitely give counting a shot. Make sure you do it out loud, not in your head. It makes a big difference.

yeah I know I've seen him twice. amazing. I've played almost 10 years so I'm a bit past intermediate but the shit he does live just blows my mind. kind of reminds me I think of what seeing Hendrix might have been like (at least in terms of jaw droppingness).

if you can sing in the car and play guitar, all it takes is practice and you'll be able to sing and play guitar. having a good ear helped me learn to sing.

This is true. Singing while playing guitar is pretty much second nature to me at this point and I'm not even that great at singing or playing guitar. I find it's best to practice playing and singing ridiculously easy songs like Horse with No Name that only have 2-3 chords. The less you have to focus on at once the better.
Good luck regardless, it's really rewarding to be able to play and sing songs.
