Smoky mountain mushroom ID

Habitat: Found in a campground on mossy soil. I also found a few in a rocky area. Weird.
Gills: Purplish brown gills. They look like they're attached but they actually aren't.
Stem: Hollow, thick stems. They're about 3-5 inches long. They're whitish brown. No visible bruising whatsoever. As you can see in the pictures, they have little black specks a little bit past halfway up the stems.
Cap: same color as the stems. They have almost amanita-like scales, but not as pronounced. The younger shrooms have caps that are closed and spherical.
Spore print color: I took one over about 3 hours that was pretty weak but it was purplish gray. More gray than purple though. I'm taking one overnight to see if it gets any better.
Bruising: None I know no actives are supposed to be found in the smoky mountains, but these look suspect as fuck so i thought I'd try to get them ID'ed. They're definitely the "trippiest" looking mushrooms I've ever seen. I got much better pictures on my dads canon, but that would take a lot of effort I don't feel like putting forth. I'm on vacation dammit. Hopefully iPhone pictures will suffice

Pretty damn good guess. I looked those up and they all had a black line on the margin, something that I forgot to mention in the first post. Thanks man

No, I haven't. I didn't know that they were considered an edible mushroom.

make sure you cook them
totally. i'm too chickenshit to eat them raw anyway.
but even an anecdotal report of someone enjoying them raw (with no ill effects) is enough to intrigue me about eating a mushroom that isn't well known to be a choice edible...especially if its kactus since he probably eats more non-active fungi than any ten other shroomerites put together.

Interesting. I find these once in a while and always just shrug and snap a picture. I will have to collect next time.

Have you tried A. muscaria? Prepared as food of course. It is probably the best thing I have tried, in my opinion.

I would only try it if it was devoid of all poisons.

Yeah it was a nervous experience for me. I boiled it twice for 10 min each, changing out the water each time, then sauteed it thoroughly. I ate the thing over the course of an hour or so. A bit of a nervous experience, but the result was delicious.
But anyways, sorry OP. I will stop clogging your post now .

Haha I don't mind at all man I haven't actually even checked this thread since I was told what it was. I read that they were bitter and therefore considered inedible, so I threw them out. Pretty interesting stuff though. Thanks everyone for your replies
