I'm ex-military and would consider myself mildly patriotic, though I don't care for politics whatsoever. I may just be more of a veteran-supporter than patriotic I guess - WW2 vets make me tear up just from being in their presence.

I for the most part agree with Carlin in that the country was "bought for and paid for a LONG time ago", and never believed anything I could ever do would affect anything, so I don't dabble in politics, and live a quiet life by myself with my family. I don't watch the news, read it, or care for it .

A country's actions are defined by those that rule it. I always find it sadly funny when people talk about how they love their country, but hate their government. "But the constitution!", lol. If you align with a country and support statism, you should be willing to accept criticism from the apoliticals.

Let's talk about flag burning!!

Burn all you want.  They are just symbols.

Right. And it's funny. The only reason I bring it up is when all the vets and patriots get so butthurt that they bring up violence. "He's burning American flag. Practicing his rights. Let's beat him up for practicing what our country was founded upon"

I am not all that enamored of WW2 vets.  It was their generaton that got 50,000 of my generation killed for nothing.  A lot of the leaders were vets.  Pardon me if I don't think they are the greatest generation.  I missed that horror by a hair's breadth

Say all you want but the boots on the ground saved millions of lives and perhaps the world from dictatorship and fascism - I count that for something. I'm talking about combat vets, not 'leaders' sitting behind desks  Also, removing Hitler from power isn't exactly "nothing". 407,316 US soldiers died, while over 10 million civilians died at the hands of the axis.

I'm far from the most patriotic guy in the world -- that said, I don't "hate" my country. If one "hates" their country, then why even be there? Okay yeah, so up & moving countries isn't as easy as moving down the street. But seriously, if I hated my country, I'd at least be making long term plans to get out at some point down the road.

I'm also very proud of my country in ways, and disappointed in it in others. I think that's natural. No country is perfect. And here we're far (US) from perfect. But it's still a great, GREAT country. Despite the faults it's still one of the great countries on this planet.

And by the way, OP, I think it's still possible for one to dislike their government, yet be proud of their country at the same time. There's an infinite number of people around the globe who have deep, deep love & connection for their country, yet despise their governments.

I appreciate what the grunts did a great deal but I do not appreciate the attitude that came out of the whole generation.  They got a shit load of my generation killed for nothing.  My cousin included. Tortured and starved.  Nah.  I aint going to forgive them.  It would have been so easy to win, too, but they totally fucked it up and got a lot of South Vietnamese killed as well.  Total fuckups.

I'm expecting many butthurts. I'm thinking of this from an American aspect. I've met soooo many motherfuckers who are patriotic as fuck, yet continue to not abide by laws set by their government. My favorite line is "I love my country. I hate my government", lolol. So, are you proud of your country? I can't say I'm proud or ashamed as I don't let that define me. I was just born in an area that has been defined as a nation by false geographical lines. Do you let your countries actions define yourself?

I have a very turbulent relationship with my mother country but it will suffice to say that I love her to death. I don't know if I'd say that I'm proud to be a 'Murican but I honestly can't think of many other places I'd want to live or that could, on the whole, treat me much better.

Also fuck Canada. :gc:

I would love to leave my country. But what's the point in spending THOUSANDS to attempt to leave and only end up in another cesspool.

And I'd say I have to disagree. A country is synonymous with it's government; regardless of changes over years. Country is nothing more than boundaries (which have been previously defined by a nation). Governement, or nation, is the governmental entity occupying those boundaries. It'd be more logical to say you appreciate the 'scenery' of a 'country' than to even say you're proud of the country itself. For example, I love the region I live in and am obliged to stay in because of legal restrictions, however, I do not extend that to it's people, government, or history. I just think it's puuuurtyyy.

Okay so basically you think the entire globe sucks, since in your world the country you live in sucks, and everywhere else is a "cesspool". Gotcha.

So in order for one to have any level of pride and/or love for their country -- they must 100% love and agree with everything their government does?

:trololol:

A country is more than just a government & a region. A country is everything -- region, climate, the people, the culture, the food, the music, the entertainment, the government...it encompasses everything. Do you have to like everything to be patriotic? That's a really, really simplistic way of looking at it.

I am in the process of this. Yeah, it's tough and not easy. Also, no matter where you go you'll never escape America. There's McDonald's everywhere and as shitty as American movies and music are, people in other countries love it. I know what you're trying to say but at a certain point that inner peace spirituality stuff isn't helpful. There are corrupt assholes out there and its not a problem of self image of the people they step on. There's genuine nasty shit going on and no amount of introspection or meditation is going to sort it out

Lmao what a shitty reality you must live in day to day. You're so consumed with your hatred of America that you would allow it to haunt you no matter where you go in the world. I'm not suggesting you do this, but me personally, if I was consumed with that much hate to where I would go to, let's say Malaysia, and I was still pissed off and haunted by big, bad, evil, shitty America...I'd fucking off myself. Seriously.
