I steamed them for an hour and a half. I don't know at what temp. Just kept the water boiling for the entire hour and a half.

keep me posted on the rye jars please. I'm curious if they are going to contam or not. They may even finish growing out but when you put them to fruit I'm certain a contam will show... trich etc. If it does turn green get rid of it quick and safely.

Last post was actually the BRF cakes. This one shows all, the 3 on the left are the Rye, and the 4 on the right are the BRB cakes:

Most likely you cannot see any mycelium on the rye in the pics. If I look close I can see a little mycelium. Does this show a problem, or does rye just colonize slower than rice flour?

I am personally thinking the BRF cakes are most likely going to be fine, and that I am screwed with the Rye. I am most likely going to be buying a pressure cooker, so I do have a question.
I don't want to have to order more spores, so if I am able to get Oyster mushrooms from the BRB cakes, will it be a fairly easy process to create spawn from the mushrooms growing from the BRF?

Following. Interested in your progress. I recently acquired some Choc Oyster spawn and am interested in reading along. Thank you for your work.

Well you'll have to get into doing agar work if you want to make more oyster myc. Once you grow an oyster, there is a tek you can follow to scrape some of the tissue from the inside of the stem and place onto agar so you clone that mushroom and have a big plate of myc you can use.
I don't know much about oysters (I have a vile of blue oyster myc I will be putting to use soon) but if they drop spores you could also spread some spores on agar and let it grow out that way too although it will be MS and not a clone.

Just go give a quick update...
I birthed by BRF cakes today. I decided to do the dunk and roll method, so they are currently soaking.
Also the Rye that was not colonizing actually started to colonize. I know they will probably still contaminate, but I am going to let them go for a while. They are probably only 15% colonized.

often times they won't colonize if there is bacteria. I would be very careful. If you see green it may be too late and you'll have trich spores all over your house. Think about it.
Rye is a great medium and myc would have colonized it already

At this point, I have dunked the BRF cakes for 24 hours, and rolled them in verm. I placed them in my terrarium with perlite that I sprayed with water to keep the humidity up.

Shit man that looks cool. I can't tell from the pics but are they sitting right on the perlite? If so you should really elevate them or they will dry out from the perlite absorbing the moisture in the cake.
Put them on a lid, or something.

Yeah, they are sitting right on the perlite. I soaked the perlite in water beforehand also. I used the instructions from these videos: http://www.shroomery.org/11432/Lets-Grow-Mushrooms-Pf-tek-videos
It is pretty exciting for me, this is my first attempt at growing anything ever. I am currently colonizing substrate with some other spores that I ordered also.

Oh yeah, and I actually have it raised higher up, it is not directly on the floor like in one of the previous pictures.

I'm not a Trusted Cultivator, but I feel like even in my noobie lack of wisdom I may still impart the knowledge of... Not putting your substrate directly onto the perlite. Use foil, a tray, a rack, even your jar lid - which is what most people do, I gather.

Thanks for the tips everyone about the mushrooms not being in the perlite. I fixed the issue.
Does anyone know what the general rule is for when to harvest Oysters? Do a wait until they get a certain size?

Just before the edges curl up. For most anyway. Pinks are strange, they always seem to look like they are curling up. The big thing is, before the spores begin to drop too much. With pinks at the first sign of any spores I pick, or even before.
