PF Jar - Toss or Birth?
    #22134327 - 08/24/15 07:33 AM (8 years, 5 months ago)

I started some pint jars about 2 months ago, and now two are colonized and have been consolidating for awhile. Over a week I believe. I would just birth and start fruiting, but I'm concerned about a yellow patch and some unusual looking mycellium growth in this one jar. I think its fine, but in case it isn't just metabolites, which I believe normally means contamination anyway, I wanted to get another opinion. Not sure if the patch of growth is normal either. Any help would be appreciated.

This is the jar from the front and looks fine.

This is the potential problem area.

You can see a pale yellow patch on a bit of it. Sorry the quality of the pictures aren't that great, but I'm hoping it works reasonably enough.

I would fruit them. It just looks like metabolites to me.

Thank you Funk, if I can just get 1 or 2 other people to also confirm, that would be nice.

I would go ahead an birth it, those jars usually tend to stall out. Just scrape off the un-colonized sub, dunk it, and place in your FC

Jar is fully colonized and consolidated, but thank you. Guess I'll just hope for the best.

I would also recommend using the 1/2pt wide mouth jars next time?

I know the small half pints are recommended, but I can't find those in my area. All I have are regular mouth half pints or tall wide mouth half pints. Usually use the tall ones, but decided to try some pints for a change. Slow as hell, but it's been 2 months and they are nearing colonization. Probably won't do it again.

Ace hardware has them. If there not in stock at your local Ace you can go online pay and have them shipped to your store for fee.

My local Ace doesn't have that particular jar. I check every couple months. Haven't thought about the online aspect though. Maybe. Thanks for the help everyone.
