I concur.
The dead just had a certain sound to them which really clicked with me, phish never made me feel that way.

typically i only listen to late 60's early 70's blues/jam stuff, of which there is tons and tons of great stuff that isn't super famous like floyd/zep, etc.. i don't like anything by the dead after blues for allah ~ i'm picky with my jam rock!

Phish isn't a bad band, I just think they are overrated and their ticket prices are ridiculous. I would see them if their tickets were $20, which IMO is what they are worth. The fact that a lot of my friends pay $200-300 to see them on NYE pisses me off enough to where I don't even make fun of them for it.

i'd rather see your mom beat OFF your dad. God damn everything nowadays is overpriced. tribute bands have $40-50 tickets, and almost every original group is $75+. I pay $50 a piece for primus tix for next month.. only guy I've seen repeatedly who doesn't rape his fanbase is Jello Biafra from the dead kennedys. charges $12 a head and doesn't play anything bigger than 200 max capacity clubs - he's a cool dude.

It's laughable to me that you think "Floyd/Zep" is Blues/Jam or Jam/rock I like Floyd and I like Zep but come on man I was listening to that in 1989 when I was 10 What about real blues? Otis Rush, Muddy Waters, Hound Dog Taylor, Robert Johnson, Howlin' Wolf, Bobby Blue Bland, BB King, Albert King, Pharoah Sanders?

I seriously don't even know what to say to something like what you just said. Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin are pinnacle BLUES ROCK bands, and both did long extended blues rock jams which basically became jam rock, the Dead and Velvet Underground were both doing it at the time as well albeit a bit earlier, along with many other bands of the age. Blues rock is the foundation of jam music, just like BLUES artists like you mentioned were the basis of BLUES ROCK, that people like Cream/Hendrix/etc. popularized. Every white rock band in the 60's was a BLUES ROCK band you dork, since they took the acoustic and softer electric blues and amplified the shit out of it and thus blues rock was essentially born, David Gilmour and Jimmy Page absolutely played some good blues rock AND some good blues...
I not once said anything about "real blues", I said BLUES/JAM ROCK you moran. Muddy Waters didn't go on too many 15 minute explorative guitar solo's during his songs.
I've played guitar for nearly 10 years, and own every album by every person you just mentioned you stinky chode. Each person you mentioned also was influenced by earlier blues players, but I'm not gonna make a list because I don't care. I've even SEEN BB King and many other "real blues" players live, many times. Besides all that, everyone you mentioned perhaps were electric blues players, but the British Invasion is essentially what popularized BLUES ROCK, which is different, and I like both.

I doubt you'll find a bigger blues fan then myself . It's something I'm passionate about - I listen to all blues from the 1910's to the 2010's, though somewhere in the middle is where I think the best stuff came from.
I just couldn't believe you said Zep/Floyd weren't blues/rock bands and had to call you a stinky chode... Zep's entire 1st LP is covers of Willie Dixon and other blues songs, and everything bluesy by Floyd in their early days was standard 12 bar electric blues stuff. And besides that, the point I was making is that they were very popular examples of Blues Rock - I was saying I like them but mostly a lot of other not as famous stuff as well in my post you quoted.
A good one by Floyd you may have not heard:

I looked it up Actually called Jewel Box 4 Being rare pink Floyd and totally different style than most well known Floyd, The album stood out to me Syd Barrett was still around for most of those recordings I remember being 14 because my brother had a Chevelle then that we used to cruise in listening to that My friend Brian gave me a copy of that record around that time Side note- a couple of years later my brother came into a copy of the movie "More" I got a copy of the soundtrack soon afterward It's also somewhat rare as far as Pink Floyd discography goes

What sucked me in was the stuff off of Round Room and Story of the Ghost, followed by Rift. As for particular songs I first warmed to: -Round Room, Seven Below, All of These Dreams, Meat and Roggae were all ones I liked straight away

Oh ok I just looked it up, I've heard all of those - they have so many random damn 'sets'. More has a couple good songs. I have all the Jewl Box 4 stuff on a double LP called "Complete BBC sessions 67-68".

Nah I onyl know one guy who likes phish, and I showed them to him. I tried a random assortment to test the waters, without much guidance. Oddly a lot of their live stuff felt kinda 'meh' initially, though I've come to like it since.

That was how it was for me too. I picked up a couple albums including A Live One and listened to them and they grew on me. It wasn't until I met my friend Jesse who was REALLY into Phish and he burned copies of a lot of shows he had for me and filled me in about stuff. After that I really gained an appreciation for them and their music.

it's got this awesome version of jugband blues - very haunting. lots of piper stuff and weird 30 second versions of songs.

Primus tix for show here start at 100. I might see Kraftwerk this fall too.

Yeah I've heard that one, it's pretty chill. Not as good as that one tune where all the fans get arrested for coming to the show.

Primus puts on a much better show than Phish. I don't think they are worth $100, but they are worth $50-60. Canada money doesn't have any value to me though, so I would spend as much as a million Cana-bucks to see Primus.

Actually Phish has a very tame light show. But thanx for coming in and shitting all over this great thread. Aren't you supposed to be snorting lines of Molly and and practicing your finger light show for the next skrillex concert?

They've grown rich providing a place for filthy yuppies turned neo-hippies not hip enough to swim from the mainstream to congregate and do drugs moreso than being talented musicians, but other than that I have no problem with them specifically no need to flame gloving bra. I just really like that one doodly doodly part and the drums go like "badabapadap brddddddddddddd" and it get's to be like a huge creshendo where I just spooge creating a trippy effect for the smelly bra I am LED fingerbanging.

You have to see Phish live in person to fully appreciate them. I just got back from a 3-day Phish festival yesterday where I was reminded of how talented the Phish are. Anybody that says that all they play is aimless noodles must have broken ears or something along those lines. It's one thing to not like them as a personal preference, but to say they aren't talented is beyond laughable

People really either love them or hate them. People that dislike them seem to feel strongly about it too I think it would be rare from someone to walk away from one of their shows feeling that way

So basically what you're saying is that I've got to shell out whatever overpriced admission price along with getting fucked up being a requirement, at the very least be ready to put up with a crowd of people who are fucked up, and then I can enjoy Phish. Why can't they just record and sell music the old fashioned way?
It's one thing to say Phish is talented, but to deny that there is a cult-like atmosphere surrounding them exploiting a certain crowd which is from many perspectives pathetic and boring shows a complete lack of self awareness. Fact is they're trying to profit off of people who are oftentimes hypocritically hedonistic, which the same could be said about fans of the Grateful Dead or some other cultish band, but the Grateful Dead were actually talented and did solid work in the studio, and as individuals unlike Phish who pretty much flounders ( ) without providing the drug cult that they really don't respect as much as value for the source of income

ur the biggest custie on lot
ive been to phish shows sober before and they fuking ruled, u dont have to be "fucked up" to enjoy them
they put on live shows because they do cool things with the music and its a ton of fun for everyone. theres tons of non-profit corperations that their fanebase associates with nd shit
u dont even know cuz ur the biggest noob ever dude
one day ur gonna be bored and someones gonna give u a free phish ticket, ur gonna go, then realize all the awesomeness u were missing out on.
ive seen a million live bands before, Greg Allman, Willie Nelson, the Dead50 thing, a million jazz nd funk bands, everything else nd shit, and phish is top of the line in terms of quality musicianship
ur basically so wrong lol

honestly, most of the dead studio stuff sucks IMO.
both these bands really shine in the live/improv setting.

American Beauty and Workingman's Dead are classics that transcended generations and have a wide appeal. I still hear the Grateful Dead on the radio and the way they blended styles of music was innovative and original. Phish, not so much.

Yeah exactly. American Beauty is a classic with some of the best songs I've ever heard, besides 2-3 stinkers

Sometimes I will argue this same thing with Grateful Dead fans who have the same mentality Phish fans do, but for me the Dead's studio stuff is hugely influential as well as some of the folk/bluegrass stuff Jerry Garcia did which I always really liked. The live stuff kinda boring honestly.

The live stuff kinda boring honestly.
some of jerry's solo stuff is on point or above the dead stuff this whole 3 hours and 30 minute show is stellar throughout for example - jerry garcia band
i always found live versions of their studio stuff to be boring - their best live stuff was the old classic/folk/blues covers.
