To awsner your questions... I am a novice. I now know I went to overboard on the holes. But do you think I could have used half the amount of substrate?

3" sub depth is a good place to start IMO.

It looks like it. How deep is it 4 inches or so? 3 inches is usually what I stick to.

One of the drawbacks of having such a deep substrate is the fact that they produce alot of heat while colonizing. So with a really deep substrate the core of it will be getting really warm, increasing the chances it gets contaminated drastically.

Sounds like you made a whole extra tub's worth of substrate mix. And if the bottom didn't colonize, then you didn't mix it too well either. 
Would definitely have been better spent in a third tub.
Why'd you delete your post? You said it was 5 inches, was that not what you wanted to say?

worst fuck up on that tub IMO is that the holes are placed UNDER the surface. how is fresh air gonna come in? also lacks the top holes.

6500k bulb is considered ideal. But really any bulb in the "blue" spectrum will work.
