Finally got a PC 1

I think it's a 16qt and I got it for $12.50 at a local Goodwill. Do you think it still works? How can I test it? Everything is intact; there is a rubber seal ring, petcock, pressure gauge, etc. What are the tongs for? Grabbing jars? Will the jars be safe with the metal grate set up the way it is?

I'm assuming you've googled what model PC you have and make sure you have all the parts? Just give it a test run and see how she does. When you're cooking jars as long as they're not touching the bottom its fine.

I did a test run and I got it to go past 15 psi but got kinda nervous because of the CAUTION redzone on the valve, so I released steam. Before pressure started to build up, a little water came out of the side. Is that normal/acceptable? Didn't do that after the pressure started building up.
So that little metal grate is acceptable even though it makes direct contact with the bottom? How much water should I add when I am sterilizing something?

Depends on how long the PC cycle is. With grain jars I usually go like 1.5 inches of water roughly. And 15 psi is all you need, don't need to push it any further.

I think water came out of the side because the seal wasn't all the way in the rim of the lid. After the test run, I was able to get it in properly. The rubber is in good condition.

I always put a small amount of oil on my finger and lightly coat that rubber seal with oil. Helps keep it in good condition

Thanks for the tips. So putting oil on the seal will prevent water from escaping out the side?

Well, I don't know about that. But it certainly can't hurt.
Really the only reason I put oil on mine on occasion is to keep the rubber from drying out. Plus I always like to take extra good care of my things

The lining of the vessel's opening with oil or petroleum jelly will not prevent steam from escaping the device.
The use of oil or petroleum jelly is required for PC's that have a metal to metal seal such as the All American brand Steroclave or Pressure cooker so that the seal doesn't stick after a sterilization cycle.
Your PC is good because it has a stopcock modification. That way you can sterilize at higher psi's than 15 if you so deem necessary.

I figured that applying oil to rubber would cause it to disintegrate. Maybe that's just latex though? All good info. Thanks for helping me figure this PC out.

Can't go wrong with that ^^ AAs are some of the best from what I understand. I am very happy with my deal though. I have been thinking about a pressure cooker for a long time and I finally found one way under budget

Pretty nice for 12.50$
