Salvia Divinorum Leaves are drying up significantly
    #22130511 - 08/23/15 11:31 AM (8 years, 5 months ago)

I've got it under a big plastic bag for humidity (no holes in it), in a well draining soil, big pot. It had been doing well for the first month or so that I had it but its been getting gradually worse.

I'd mist it occasionally for a while, but soon tired of it.1) So are my leaves just going to die all the way and then new more acclimated ones will grow?2) Are these dying leaves safe to eat after drying naturally attached to the plant? I've been saving the little ones that die and fall off, but now my biggest leaves are drying out significantly. I'm just hoping my lady can pull through.

3)It has been unusually hot/sunny for a long time here, and its pretty close to a window. Perhaps its getting cooked in the sun?

4) Hopefully that was read-able: Does anybody have recommendations on how to better care for her? I've been giving her water more often lately but to little/no avail. Now that I have this all written down I'm thinking maybe move her to a shadier locale until summer is over

How hot is it getting there in the humidity chamber? I wouldn't think it is the heat doing it if it is inside in a windowsill. I mean, it could be, I guess... I imagine this as a humidity issue though. Have you had the plant long or is it a new addition you just added to your collection?

One day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire cat in a tree.
'Which road do I take?' she asked.
'Where do you want to go?' was his response.
'I don't know', Alice answered.
'Then', said the cat, 'it doesn't matter.'

its new, just got it maybe 2 months ago.

Guess I could look into solutions for humidity that don't involve me misting it multiple times a day

Sorry I don't really have anything to offer here but I was just wondering why salvia has to be grown in a humidity chamber?
Ive never heard anything about growing salvia so I'm a noob in this area. But I have thought about growing it before. Just never done research.

its not needed. it just prefers humidity, but growers say it does just fine in lower humidity once acclimated.

I'm thinking about taking it off

In my experience, when you move the plant from one location to another, the plant will begin purging leaves once it has grown some new ones in the new area regardless of how healthy it is.

This has just been my experience though. It acclimates itself. Old leaves grown in 10% humidity will be replaced with new leaves grown in 50% humidity.

So what conditions do you think changed the 2nd month you had her?
She can cook real easy if not used to it, in direct sunlight and more water won't help a plant that slowed growth
She can grow healthy without one ray of sunshine hitting her leaves as long as ambient light is bright enough.

Move her to less harsh conditions, she'll love you for it I'll bet

If its inside a closed plastic bag, I wouldn't let sun hit it- can get too hot too fast.

Salvia can be difficult and the leaves dry out easily

2 months in a plastic bag is your problem. You should of acclimated it to your environment long ago. Growing salvia in humidity domes is just allowing them to die a long and slow death.

I posted my take on Salvia here once, no one read it or took notice and people are still posting the same old salvia in humidity domes threads. Sheesh!

Acclimatising it may help or kill it faster. It's at that stage where it can go either way.

well...what do you think I should do then? Slowly tear holes in the bag?

bookmarked your thread about it. surprised nobody else took notice

Funny how you can read so much about how to care for a plant before you get it and still do so poorly. I was never much good at plants though.

I feel your pain.

Personally, I didn't even use a humidity dome even when I was acclimating mine when I first got it. I told the plant it was going to either live and acclimate or die. Sink or swim, so to speak.

special thanks to karode and the others who helped. My plant is getting a lot of dry leaves during its transition but it seems like it'll pull through

I bought a salvia clone online about a month ago and asked the seller what conditions the plant was kept in before shipping. I was surprised when he said in a room with ambient humidity and temperature under flourescents.I stuck her on my counter under my plant bulb and she did just fine...healthy new growth within a week.It might help to ask what conditions your plant came from.

I never did bother asking the seller what their conditions were, I just set mine straight in the conditions they were going to be growing in at my place. Sink or Swim!

Nothing wrong with that... just a lil too risky for my blood lol.  I will say from experience, the worst thing you can do to a plant is overthink/ over care for it. Friends ask me all the time how I keep my plants so healthy and happy... I give them what they NEED and leave them alone.

True as can be! Especially with salvia, IMO.

As far as being risky, I ordered my plants and at the time, didn't feel like I had the motivation to build humidity tents/spray/etc just to keep a plant alive, so after reading one thread that disagreed with babying a sally with humidity, I told myself that mine were going to grow in my humidity, or just die... Luckily, it payed off. I'm glad it did.

I'm new to growing salvia, but I've been gardening all my life. Most plants I've grown basically grow in spite of me (given liveable conditions) why would salvia be much different. Honestly at this point, I would go as far as to say, if your salvia looks healthy when it arrives it probably doesn't need anything more than some light, maybe water and a chance to recover from its journey on its own... no  humidity tents unless you are rooting clones or starting seeds! Not to say salvia won't grow in one though, I'm sure it has its own pro's too.

Once you get salvias preferred routine understood you will be rewarded

1. Do not give her strong light like you would cannabis or cactus. She does not prefer strong light and would prefer light equal to that received on he floor of a rain forest.

2. Water her like any regular houseplant. A good soak every week or 2, or whenever surface layer dries and changes color. Not too wet, not too dry.

3. Fertilize like any other green houseplant but only when growth is vigorous.

4. Use light, airy organic soil substrate. Extra perlite is beneficial.
