Someone had this happen a year ago maybe two. The bank came after him for every penny. Not sure how it works over the pond, but there's no such thing as a free lunch.

If you have thousands in free money and no idea where it came from, bet it's a clerical error. You will be held responsible. I'd put that shit back right now and not touch it.

Give it back. I'm almost positive I know who you are and I know you don't need even more trouble coming your way right now. Especially when you certainly won't be able to pay back any of that money.
I know it's hard, but what's nice right now is not what's going to make things nice in the long run. If you don't put it back, it's going to RUIN you. They will take your measly 140 a month and make it 0. Can you live on 0?

It'll kill his credit, banks will garnish wages or deposits (possibly depending on law), and also depending on law it could be any number of theft related charges. Or some kind of fraud. No bank is going to want someone who knowingly used an error and took the money and ran.
OP, we're you expecting any back pay from a job? Disability? Benefits? Or a family member giving you a leg up?
I'd contact them asap and ask if it was an error which is better than being arrested for knowingly taking funds that were not yours.

Don't spend much of the money and wait and see if something happens. You don't want to spend all of it and find out you have to pay it back.

He's going to have to pay it back, there's no doubt about it. They don't let that kind of thing go unnoticed.

The 1968 Theft Act says "A person is guilty of theft if he dishonestly appropriates property belonging to another with the intention of permanently depriving the other of it".
It goes on to say "A person is guilty of an offence if - (a) a wrongful credit has been made to an account kept by him or in respect of which he has any right or interest; (b) he knows or believes that the credit is wrongful; and (c) he dishonestly fails to take such steps as are reasonable in the circumstances to secure that the credit is cancelled."
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/6966683.stm
It's from 2007 but they were able to charge the person with theft. I don't think you could justify expecting 5k to land in your account when your on the dole. I wouldn't spend any of it, contact the bank and query the deposit. Maybe you've a friend looking out for you, but most likely it's an error and they can claim it back and will do so. In some cases the person was left with some money (£210).
You could chance your luck for some small compensation. That actually you do have some wealthier relatives who'd joked about sending you some money. You thought that mighta been it and started to spend a bit more money than usual but not a lot, when the moneys recovered you'll be in a bad position considering your on the dole already. It's messed up your financial planning. You'd celebrated, called them to thank them and then realised it wasnt them and contacted the bank. Longshot though.
Although reading your post a bit better, you've already spent half it or more. maybe consider getting some proper legal advice.

That's what's really gonna kick you in the nuts. You better turn what you have left back into 2500 and put it right back.

#7's advice is probably your best bet at this time for damage control.
Do you have any relatives who will say that you guys talked about them lending you some money to pay off an outstanding debt to someone?

So any update? I see you posting in WCA about all these drugs you've bought and are doing.
Has the bank or anyone else figured it out and notified you yet?
What's your plan here?

It's mine, 100% legal. Govt. told me, wrote me a letter. I've been being getting less money than I am entitled too for years, hemce the massive payment.
Plan is high interest long term savings account for the remainder and what I set aside when I first got it, then watch it grow, putting regular deposits in the savings acct. from my current acct. since I should still be getting my regular payments. Plus I have enough now to do things that will save me money in the long term, so I hope to keep increasing how much I am able to save.
Also doing a bit of buying/reselling tickets now to increase what I have available

Thank you for apologising at least.
Sorry #10 I can see what you where doing there now
I found a savings acct. w/ 6% Interest, so I will probably go with that one. Good thing too is you can't get any out unless you close your account, so It will stop the temptation to spend it all.
I wish I was able to be a normal working 9-5 average 'normal' type of guy, how do you think it feels not being able to work, or do small everyday things, because your mental health. Feeling like you are not as good as everyone else, feeling like you are broken. I didn't ask for this, that's for sure.
