Way back when I was in high school 1970's...a friend of mine who I knew since cub scouts began taking LSD daily...I would see him in school all the time tripping...I mean for like a year...his big sister was shacking up with the main supplier of L in our area...so, he had a constant supply. Then, one day I saw him in the library and he was chanting some gibberish with his eyes closed... I asked him what he was doing and to stop because he was about to get in trouble again, which he could ill afford...he just looked at me...like right through me and said..."Don't you get it?"over and over. I told him he needed to stop the LSD and he replied that he hadn't taken any in months. I saw him 30 years later and he is still exactly as he was that day.
As I reflect, I do know that his dad was a drunk and physically abused him and his brother ...and that these drugs more than likely released his schizophrenic personality that was lying in wait. It still bothers me though...he was a brilliant kid...excelled in math and in sports. Scared my away from psychs for decades.

Drugs can act as an epigenetic trigger and precipitate latent mental illness. I had a childhood friend permanently lose his shit from smoking weed. True story. I've also seen people have schizophrenia triggered by methamphetamines and LSD. Bottom line is, tripping is only for people with sound minds that are not at risk for developing schizophrenia.
And as for 'who is Syd Barrett?' I seriously hope that was just an attempt at trolling.

I think Syd Barrett is a great example of not coming back from a trip.
There's a Youtube of one of the other Floyd members talking sadly about Syd's condition, mentions a group of people Syd was hanging with. He reckons it was mandrake which probably did it, that a lot of people suffered long-lasting/permanent effects from that, and it was associated with a particular bunch of people who were experimenting with this particularly dumb substance.
I think this question is more about permanent receptor binding and whether brain cells die and get replaced and whether the brain can or will re-route connections around drug-damaged areas… … ….for people without underlying mental conditions.

Most normal drugs do not permanently bind receptors. A while back some bunk heroin went out that fried everybody that took its dopamine receptors and they all got instant Parkinson's disease.
Traditional psychedelics won't do anything like that. They can encourage growth of neurons and form new pathways that lead to a different perception, thus putting you in a more trippy mindset and perhaps giving you some snow etc. (HPPD) and the newer RCs seem to be more of a danger for that, but HPPD is not what most people would consider "never coming back," just a slight inconvenience.
An overdose on NBOMes might lead to brain damage from vasoconstriction and leave you permafried, and overuse of empathogens can lead to some brain damage and loss of IQ, but again those aren't insanity, just retardation.
The people who "never come back" from psychs are those who were already teetering on the brink of sanity and the drugs merely provide a little push to set them off completely, they may have eventually still lost their minds and the drugs just made it happen earlier, or they might have been able to maintain for the rest of their lives had they abstained.
It's unfortunate that such wonderful, relatively harmless drugs can have such a devastating effect on a small percentage of users, but keeping it in context and looking at the facts can help avoid the general hysteria so many have surrounding the use of psychedelics. Everybody knows somebody that "never came back."

You don't have to like certain musicians, but you gotta at least know who they are. We were all young once, though.
I know it's sacrilege to some but I personally think that while Barrett is important to the creation of the band and remains a part of its essence even in his absence, Pink Floyd got better when he left. His loss proved the catalyst that infused Water's later writing with more pathos and without the addition Gilmour's blues drenched guitar and prog-rock mentality they would have just been another minor example of late 60's pychedelic pop.
