Heating problem...
    #2212832 - 01/01/04 04:37 AM (13 years, 5 months ago)

i have tried to think of ways to heat my operation.
My first idea was to use the ambient heat in my house, that did not work because of the need for concealment and there was no good hiding place.
My second idea i thought of while looking at how to build a incubator I thought that i could put a fish heater in a glass and place that in a 4L ice cream tub with the glass sticking out of the top.
I spent a night getting it together and tested it, no cakes just some water in the bottom.
The thermometer that i put inside said the air\water was hot enough to support the cakes.
but when i touched the glass it was very hot.
The problem is that the tub is very small and the cakes would come close or touch the glass.
and since to much heat kills the mush you can see my problem.

If any of you have any idea that could help me i would greatly appreciate it.
If worse ill have to get a bigger tub and work harder to conceal my grow.

If you're going to use tubs and then stealth gets hard, then a 'tub in a tub' with water in the lower tub with a fish tank heater works. Fruit terrarium left, incubator right.

I suggest a piece of cement sheet in the lower water filled tub to prevent a possible melting of the tub base by the fishtank heater...could save ya a flooding.

i've had success with waterbed heaters...they're somewhat cheap. they don't require a tub, you can just set the jars on a towel ontop of the heater on a shelf, or wherever you want. and the heat is very accurate.

I have used just a regular heating pad that is used for sore muscles. I have also used an electric blanket wrapped around the container. Temps have to be checked often till the right setting is found.

in a trunk or something else, you can use one of these http://www.greenair.com/tempstat.htm with a small heater/fan like this http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&product%5Fid=63-1507 (though this one has a thermometer built in, so you could not get the tempstat) and that should keep them cozy.
