You know what's really crazy is this plant is still gonna flower so it'll put another 2 feet on
It's gonna have to grow along the ceiling towards the light

I wanted to keep her uncut for a big terminal flower, but I underestimated her growth. Too late now so we'll see what happens

Wow! I was gonna joke and say that you were holding a pot up near the ceiling to make it look like it was that tall until you posted the full shot! Nice!
Time to get a contractor to come in and make your ceilings higher now...

Well looks like one of the plants I thought were dead a few weeks ago is trying to kick back alive.... None of the others that died looks like they are going to make a comeback.

That eight foot salvia is very impressive man.
I just wanted to pop in and say that after transplanting they are doing very well. I think that this more barky soil is better. I think they really love airy soil and hate compacted soil, at least IME. Not sure that this will help how the lower leaves start to slowly turn brown and die though. Any thoughts on that would help. It seems lots of you don't have this problem and your humidty is similar. Mine is usually between 45 and 50.
However I seem to have introduced gnats. Will they hurt my plants?

On the subject of compact soil.
I have 3 big established plants, last time I transplanted them into their big permanent homes I accidentally used a very sandy mix for one of them.
The other two seem to be doing a bit better but all 3 are doing ok. The one thing I noticed is watering the sandy soil is annoying and takes more effort to soak.

Sad days over here. My plant got a terrible infestation of whiteflies. Sprayed with neem and seem to have killed off most the buggers, but the damage was done, and all leaves started shriveling into brown crispiness. I cut all of them off hoping to stop the die off, but the stem started to degrade as well. I used a clean razor today to amputate the sick portion, and cauterized the wound with sulfur powder. Keeping my fingers crossed for new shoots.
Super disappointed to see Canada's announcement of an impending Salvia ban. I thought North America was starting to head in a positive direction concerning drug prohibition.

Sorry to hear that man, those damn white flies are pesky lil buggers!
Last winter I had a bad infestation of them on y big sallies in a heated greenhouse. I kept killing them and spraying the plants and they kept coming back.
All I could do was find the most infested leaves and remove them and wipe off the ones that were just starting to get infested.

Yeah I got these gnats now. I could see little larva in the soil. I need to set up some of those little fly traps or something, not sure what else to do besides throw some neem oil on them.
Does it hurt the roots if neem oil gets in the soil?
I will say though, they both really exploded in growth. Pretty amazing. Clearly, I am no expert, but compact soil is a no go. I have read this before, but didn't realize just how much it mattered. Using black typical looking soil didn't work well. It works well for a while, but then it gradually compacts. This new stuff is more like bark practically. Much fluffier and I threw in quite a lot of perlite and verm. I don't think it will compact nearly as much. They also needed more light, which I gave them. More, as in closer.
I have also been talking very nicely to them. Maybe it helps, I figure it's worth a try

I slacked off and never got ahold of any diatomaceous earth, from what I hear, that will put a stop to most types of pests.

Acquired 10 seeds in June (almost 4 months ago) and 4 sprouted. Unfortunately, 3 of them were killed by too much morning sunshine (I think), but one baby girl made it through the tough phase and is growing rapidly!
Just thought I'd share.
