Growth On Sides, But None On Top?
    #22126368 - 08/22/15 10:58 AM (8 years, 5 months ago)

This is our first grow, and the shrooms seem to be growing beautifully on the sides, but as you can see in the pic there is no growth on top.  What are we doing wrong?  Thanks!

Is that just a block of sub on a rack in a SGFC?

I have noticed this happening with my BRF cakes the problem is caused in my opinion either by there not being enough dry vermiculite on it or the sides that are pinning and fruiting may be in a better environment than the top for example in your picture it looks like the little grates can cause a microclimate to form on the sides since humidity can get trapped in the part where the myc meets the bar. If you notice, in the wild, mushrooms will grow at the bottoms of trees or on the sides of rocks. This is because the tree or rock creates a semi barrier that keeps the humidity higher there than anywhere else.

Something to think about...

how many inches of perlite do you have? I've had this problem and I think its from low humidity.

BRF cakes fruiting on the sides isn't a problem.....it's normal. If you had that in a tray I bet it would fruit on top, but since you don't, it will fruit wherever conditions are best, as previously mentioned.

usually get this with my first flush, after that when you dunk and put it back in your fc just lay it on the opposite side that they were on before and you should get a nice pinset on the top. Their are pins underneath that you can't yet see that will benefit from the fae when you dunk/roll/flip

I have fixed the problem of fruiting mainly on the side of my cakes simply by adding a little more dry verm on the top and just like that I was getting growth on the top. Also, I have done trays before and I experienced the same problem as the OP did. I fixed this by raising the humidity in the chamber ever so slightly. Just because its a cake and a tray doesn't mean the mushroom will require a different environment to fruit it simply means you have to create that environment a little differently for the two.

If I were this person I would raise the humidity a bit unless they were satisfied with getting fruits on the sides. I noticed the ones that grow on the top usually look larger but thats probably because it grows straight up instead of growing outward then up to drop the spores. Mushrooms are living and by knowing what they like you can treat them better and they will in turn treat you better as well.

At least thats what I've learned while doing this the past few years.

P.S. Just added a pic of one of my more interesting grows that successfully fruited out the top to my signature..
