how useful is agar?
    #2212607 - 12/31/03 11:35 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

I saw a picture of psilocybus mexicanua (or whatever it's called) fruiting inside a petri dish with sterile agar. I have an abundant supply of silly scientific instruments, like agar. Could i get a yeild out of petri dish?? some one please explain this, thank you.

To grow enough mushrooms for personal use through agar would be extremely expensive, laborous, and just not worth it. I'd easily pick the PF tek of agar and I'm not a big fan of the PF tek.

maybe you could, but I would rather sell the agar here on the marketplace and buy some WBS or something similar for the money.

Bulk substrates or even the classic PF tek would blow agar yeilds out of the water. Hell agar might not even give you enough shroomies to have fun with, but then I have a bit of a tolerance it seems. Agar is good stuff though, you can isolate strains on agar and increase yeilds and size through selecting the best mushroom and subsequently the best rhizomorphic growth of an agar culture prepared from such a shroom.

Like everybody else said, fruiting on it is more for novelty or science, but If you are looking to get rid of some, I've been looking for a source without a company name. message me if you're interested.

psilocybus mexicanua... lol

Using agar is cheap and easy. A cheap and durable alternative to petri dishes are half pint wide mouth canning jars. I prefer them over pyrex petris. You can easily acquire the ingredients for mixing your own agar too. It's very useful for many reasons. You have guaranteed quality inoculant, you can clone, store cultures, etc.

agar can be wonderul for knocking up some jars with live mycelium.not alot of people use it on the shroomery because it really doesn't take that long for spores to germinate on wbs or verm\brf.

Use agar to help isolate a good fruiting strain. http://www.mycotopia.net/cgi-bin/discus/show.cgi?tpc=5&post=133501#POST133501 Yes, mushrooms will fruit on agar.
