Mushrooms that eats oil ?
    #22125760 - 08/22/15 07:19 AM (8 years, 5 months ago)

So im in the dangereous waste recycling industrie, i gather alot of oily waste and oil contaminated soil. i have a 10 yard container that i ship every 2-3 months. it costs me around 2500 $ to send it.

was wondering if i could just keep the container, fill it with spores ,let the mushrooms do their job and save 2500$ every 2-3 months ?

i know its probably more complicated then that but could it be possible? , what are the flaws in this? how much time do you think it takes to colonize a 10 yard container?

thanks guys

i think stamets used oysters ... but im not sure im remembering correctly. and you should look it up for yourself.

because oil floats on water, and it was quite thick, i assume it would be safe and reasonable for you to just build a float and put it into a vat....

as for the speed at which it would work... i think it would take a while, but finding a strain that was good at it wouldnt take too long i imagine. then you'd need to see how much nastiness was in the mushrooms, you might need to then harvest the mushroom and have another species of mushroom which eats mushrooms eat THOSE... such that the oil is upcycled enough times to be completely clean.

it might also be a good idea to soak the oil into something, like water retaining polymers. and let the mushies grow on that (instead of building a float) then you could occasionally spray some liquid culture on the crystals.

oh wow http://www.herbmuseum.ca/content/pleurotus-ostreatus-aka-oyster-mushrooms-eat-diesel-and-oil just looked it up ,this is EXACTLY what i want to do. he used Pleurotus ostreatus. this is really interesting!! it can even eat diesel and gasoline

that would be an issue probably depends on how much there is in what i get. but from paul stamets experimentation after the mushroom grew they died and stuff and plant started growing. The PPM of diesel and oil went from 20000 to 200 which is really good

maybe I could start but on a smaller scale ,and with only oil and gasoline/diesel contaminated soil. i get some rather clean ones from time to time. ill keep them aside for my experimentations :crazy2:

I charge around 200$ per 205lts barrel, so if this works it would be pretty awesome

well its not used oil , title kinda fucked up , used oil is worth something so i can just sell it right away:wink:

i would start with only lightly contaminated soil.

OHHH... then you need a huge pressure cooker, and you can just inoculate the oil soaked soil, after you have sterilized it.

you can even just use oysters on the soil without sterilizing but it will work faster if you cook it.

maybe i could just pasteurize the soil in a container, do like a industrial bucket tek, then mix oyster spawn through it ?

im just not totally sure about heating oil and petroleum products tho, fire risks and possible toxic fumes , gonna have to look it up or do test.

I wouldn't worry about pasteurization or anything like it. There aren't likely to be crazy amounts of competitors in such an environment and even if there were, they won't be an large enough colonies to cause problems (unless they are already eating the oil which is probably a good thing!). Not to mention that you won't be able to sell the mushrooms that grow without lots of tests first to ensure they are contaminate free as it is impossible to say (because the research isn't there) what is being converted by the fungus to safe compounds vs. what is being taken up and stored by the mushroom in its toxic form.

The most important thing will be having a high enough spawn rate and possibly adding some sawdust or other material for mycelia to gain a foothold. [Edit]: after all pasteurizing 10 yards of material sounds like WAYYYY more work than I would ever put in.

mycoremediation is a really interesting topic. Usually, mushrooms are used to absorb heavy metals, but here is some information i found about using oyster mushrooms to clean up oil.

yes your link is dead, but we have been talking about that same thing, fungi.com is stamets' website, and we were refering to his work above.

i have a friend in the bio-remediation industry.  bacteria are a lot more commonly used than fungi because they are a lot easier to genetically modify, among other reasons.  faster to multiply...etc.

I agree, but isn't there already a strain for this?

It can't be TOO hard to get into unless it's proprietary research.

That said, mushrooms are picky but with just mycelium... Who knows?

I'm certain it's been done before and yeah, oysters ring a bell.

They will eat newspaper and toilet paper after all :V

Why?

S. cervacia site-directed mutagenesis kits are very common..

Or do you mean something more advanced like RNA i?
